Why Japan is Awesome Reason #711: Burger King’s Spam Burgers

If you’re lucky enough to live in Japan, as of yesterday, you can walk into your local Burger King and order something the rest of us in the world can only dream of: a Spam Burger.

Now, I know many folks here in the U.S. (especially the white folks) think Spam is a disgusting mystery meat. But for many Asians—not to mention Hawaiians here—Spam is pretty damn awesome! If you’ve never had Spam Musubi:

Or a homemade plate of Spam fried rice:

Well, personally, I think you haven’t lived. One of my earliest memories is of going to the Korean market on Sundays with my parents and seeing that big display of Spam cans, one on top of another until it formed a giant pyramid, and the wonder of that sight.

Japan is specifically marketing their Spam burgers to women under the slogan: “What women want, what women get.” Supposedly, women are the ones who have been demanding that a Spam burger be added to their menu because at 174 calories and 15g of fat, it is the “healthiest” option on the menu. That’s right—Spam is the best thing for you at Burger King. Let that fact sink in.

I just hope these will sell so well that Burger King will consider including them on their menus outside of Japan. But with this announcement and the recent news that Japanese scientists have invented a turd burger (meat made from human feces), I think it’s safe to say that Japan is on the edge of meat innovation. I guess you could say that the Japanese must enjoy…playing with their meat (click here after reading that last sentence to get the maximum comedic effect out of my clever wordplay).

  1. GOD BLESS THE USA! exporting super-sized portions to make sure Japanese youth can never pick up weapons because they’re all too obese since 1955.

  2. God, I love spam and I am a girl. I like to sauteed them and eat them with rice. yum yum!
