According to a new study by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, more than 24 million men in China may find themselves unable to find a woman to wed by the year 2020. It’s not because Chinese men are seen as undesirable by the society at large (these are Chinese men after all, not Chinese American men), but because of a severe gender imbalance created by that country’s one-child policy which was introduced in 1979.
The study concludes that because of China’s cultural preference for males over females, sex-specific abortions have become common and resulted in this gender imbalance. For every 100 girls who are born in China, 119 boys are born. In some areas the ratio is even higher—130 males for every 100 females. The female shortage is expected to hit the men in less-prosperous regions especially hard. Many of them will have to marry later in life or wed brides who are much older if they’re able to get married at all.
It sounds pretty dire and I don’t envy my Chinese brethren. If you’re a Chinese dude and want to get laid, you may just have to suck it up and go the Brokeback Mountain route (does anyone know how to say “I wish I could quit you” in Mandarin?), move to another country, find a mail-order bride if you can afford it or just pray real hard that the Mayans and Roland Emmerich were right and the world will be destroyed in 2012 which would solve your problem.

Well, Chinese men can always turn to white women for companionship. I personally know of one who will be moving to China later this year for a teaching job.
There was a recent article in Slate.com that talked about a boom of Chinese men marrying Russian women because there are more women than men in Russia.
“One feature of the Russian-Chinese relationship seemed especially telling: Cross-border marriages are overwhelmingly between Chinese men and Russian women. Much of this has to do with demographics—Russia has a surplus of women, while China has too many men. But as one Russian woman told me, ‘Chinese men are kinder and more attentive to their wives. And they usually have more money.’”

If China were to take a page from America’s past and possibly still present love traditions by giving incest a try, there wouldn’t be a problem except for when it comes time to address one another during social gatherings/ conventions and getting it right. Can China soil their reputation any worse?
