Sex is the theme of this week’s issue of LA Weekly and one of the featured articles is a survey of UCLA students about their sex lives and attitudes about sex. Aside from the finding that college students (or at least the ones who go to UCLA) don’t seem to be as sex-crazed as the internet/media might have you believe (only 3.2% of the students had threesomes after getting drunk. That’s it?!), there was another result that caught my attention. Check out this question (Who is the celebrity you most want to have an affair with?) and the responses:

In case you missed the “anomaly,” look again at the column for “who the boys most want to have an affair with,” and scroll down to the seventh choice right under the First Lady. Yip, it’s the “Asian guy” from the hit TV show Glee…Harry Shum Jr. a.k.a. Mr. Asian American Six-Pack:

I don’t know Shum nor have I been able to sit through an entire episode of Glee (I’ve tried, but sorry, it’s a little too…gay for me), but he was at the San Diego Asian Film Fest where we were doing our INTERPRETATIONS thing and he seemed like a totally cool guy. So when I refer to his appearance on the list as an “anomaly,” it’s not a knock on him at all. I mean take a look at that photo above. He’s definitely one sexy motherfucka and I’d add him to my updated list of guys I’d fuck if I were gay or a chick (sorry Anderson, I’d probably have to bump you to make room for the Shumster).

I just find it a bit odd that he would appear as the top male on a list of who the boys would want to fuck. It’s not that it’s strange a male is included–obviously, gay boys participated in the survey and James Franco also appears on the list. But I don’t find Franco’s presence as odd because, frankly, he’s a super-famous, pretty boy, Oscar-nominated movie star and former UCLA student to boot. If any guy was going to make it on a list of UCLA boys’ fuck fantasies, it’d be James Franco. I’d also find it less odd if Shum had also appeared on the list of who the girls want, but he is conspicuously absent there (though Franco makes an appearance).

Sidebar: Do college girls really want to boink Al Pacino and Tim Curry? Really? I don’t know if I should be happy or disturbed about that.

If Shum is indeed the #1 male fantasy for these UCLA boys, you’d think he would also make an appearance in this next question, but he is once again absent:

So when the boys were asked who they’d fuck if they had to pick someone of the same-sex, Shum doesn’t make the cut. Which I take to mean that the gay boys probably picked Shum as their top choice in question #3, but when the straight boys had to pick the guy they’d like to fuck in question #4, they stuck with more traditional and expected choices like Brad Pitt and Leo DiCaprio.

So from this, I am deducing that it is indeed the UCLA gay boys that made Shum their top male choice. But I still don’t get why.

Again, Shum is a handsome and talented guy, but there are so many handsome and talented guys in Hollywood who are more famous than him; that you would expect to make it onto the list ahead of him—the Taylor Lautners, the Zac Efrons, the Denzel Washingtons. Even if you’re looking at Asians, there are plenty of good-looking, talented guys who are probably more famous than Shum—the John Chos and Jay Chous of the biz.

Perhaps one could make the argument that this choice came about because UCLA has a lot of Glee fans and/or a huge Asian population (as well as the yellow fever contingent that follows that huge Asian population). But I don’t think the results support those theories. Although Glee-castmate Diana Agron also made it to the list, I think we’d see a lot more Glee actors if the popularity of the show played a significant part in the voting. And if the Asian or yellow fever thing were a factor, we’d see a lot more Asian names on the lists, too. But as it stands, Shum is the only Asian who made the cut.

When I say that I find it odd that Shum appears on this list, I don’t mean that in a bad way at all. In fact, my surprise at seeing his name was a pleasant one. The fact that an Asian brotha is represented is pretty righteous as far as I’m concerned. I just didn’t realize that Shum was so…well, big (maybe not the right word but it seems appropriate in this context).

So if anyone else can enlighten me on this topic, please do so. But I do know one thing—as you’re reading this, there’s probably a bunch of boys over in Westwood who are happily masturbating to this:
