And now, to all our YOMYOMF viewers playing along at home, in the 7os and 80s, he was a fixture on Canuck television both as the voice of the Toronto Blue Jays and as host of popular game show, “Just Like Mom.” He’s also a major perrrrr-vert! Heeeere’s your host, Fer-gie Oliver!
Whoa, Canada!
There have been a handful of mild debates amongst friends since the video was sent around and viewed by our group of current and former network news professionals. A few reasoned that Mr. Oliver’s actions were harmless, an acceptable practice and product of a different, more innocent era free from overwrought scrutiny. Others countered that the video was indeed disturbing, the dude is inappropriate and a creep and, had this been in the present, it would be a matter of time before Chris Hansen and his “To Catch A Predator” crew snagged Fergie in their trademark stings.
Watching the video also brought a sense of faint deja vu. On any typical weekday while growing up, my younger siblings — a sister and a brother — and I watched quite a bit of tv. Game shows were a particular favorite and, somewhat inexplicably, one of the shows we enjoyed was “Family Feud,” which, we noticed, featured a rather overtly friendly host in Richard Dawson (born Colin Lionel Emm). We laughed at his proficiency in smooching female contestants of all ages. Here’s one particular example. Note the number of kisses planted on contestant Lynn — and her subsequent body language as a result — and her sister, Laura.
By now, we were far from the only people who noticed and even his fellow show biz peers lampooned his actions, here courtesy of tv actress Susan Richardson while on the actual show.
Did you take note of how hurt Richard was upon the reveal? Apparently, through all the lip-to-lip salutations, there was a method to ol’ Richard’s madness. Amidst the volume of saliva exchanges, he allegedly fell head over heels for a 21-year old Feud contestant and proposed to her on the show. Gosh, was this all just a product of a lonely divorcee’s wants and needs, inappropriate though they may be?
Here’s the aftermath of his on-air question popping:
Alas, a Hollywood ending, unlike the above video — unrehearsed — came to be. Richard Dawson did eventually wed the object of his quasi-Lolita affections, Gretchen Johnson in 1991 and produced a daughter, Shannon Nicole. As a commitment to his wife and daughter, he vowed to end his now infamous contestant-bussing until his retirement from the show in 1995.
They remain married.

So there was a time when women would just freely kiss men when prompted? In the words of Clay Davis, Sheeeeeee-it
There is a world, no, a universe, of difference between a 12 yr old and 19 yr old girl. There’s a reason 15 will get you 20. Christ, that Fergie guy was creepy – one glance at his eyes and shellacked helmet of hair and I would lock my daughters in Fort Knox.
Am I a cold fish for being offended that Richard Dawson thought he could just kiss every woman on his show? I don’t see him kissing any men… what, if you’re going to be affectionate, be equal about it!
And Fergie Oliver, one word…. INAPPROPRIATE.
[...] TO CATCH A PREDATOR: THE GAME SHOW EDITION [...]
I concur: The actions of Fergie Oliver, regardless of era, are predatory.
Richard Dawson is officially retired from game shows and show business. Kissing women or not, he quit working. Nothing lasts forever. We wish him well. Dawson is very much alive in California.
