The Short List: VIA TEXT

As part of our new YOMYOMF Network series, The Short List, where we present short films we love every Friday at Noon EST, we’ve reached out to the filmmakers with 5 Questions to see what’s up since the production of their short film. It’s a way for them to revisit their film and get an update on their next projects. You can view all The Short List films here.

This week, we ask 5 questions to director Abe Foreman-Greenwald about his short film VIA TEXT.

1. How did you come up with the concept for this short?

Lynn Chen and I wanted to work on a short together with an extreme creative limit. We talked about doing a “one woman film” and tried to come up with a scenario that would allow us to do that. Then we thought of having another character portrayed only through text and having Lynn’s character react to those texts. Essentially it’s a modern day silent film.

2. Any challenges or setbacks during the production?

It was a pretty short shooting schedules, so no major setbacks. Stealing shots at the Grove and Farmer’s Market was a challenge but I think it added to the realism of the life of an Angeleno. We had to work with the environment as it exists, and shot those scenes handheld because we couldn’t set up a tripod.

3. Any funny stories from the making of this film?

Well, it was the first short film that my wife Lynn and I have made together and we’ve been together since college. Back then, I made her stop smoking since I really can’t stand cigarette smoke. But for this film, I made her start again since we thought the smoking would make sense as a way to visually express the character’s anxiety. Luckily, she hasn’t picked up the habit again…at least not that I know of.

4. Where has your film played? Festivals or other places around the world?

5. What’s been going on with you, filmmaking wise since the completion of this short? What are you working on next?

I’ve been working as a producer on HuffPost Live, the new streaming news network from Huffington Post and also shooting and producing my own short documentaries.

Lynn recently wrapped Season 2 of the web series “Nice Girls Crew” and just returned home from a tour of Germany and Czech Republic as singer with the D.C.-based band E.D. Sedgwick. And she had to endure lots of cigarette smoke in those European clubs.
