As part of the YOMYOMF Network series, The Short List, where we present short films we love every Friday at Noon EST, we’ve reached out to the filmmakers with 5 Questions to see what’s up since the production of their short film. It’s a way for them to revisit their film and get an update on their next projects. You can view all The Short List films here.
This week, we feature Doan La’s comedy short film, ABBY WHITE, INTERRACIAL RELATIONSHIP COUNSELOR. We ask 5 questions to the director about the making of his film.
1. How did you come up with the concept for this short?
I was having lunch one day with Chaz (who plays Tyrone), and we somehow got on the topic of dating, and the funny patterns and problems that seemingly recur depending on the girl’s ethnic background. *Yes, I know that sounds racist as hell but I couldn’t come up with a more diplomatic way of saying it without sounding like a couple of assholes were sitting around talking about Asian chicks versus white chicks. Please don’t judge.
2. Any challenges or setbacks during the production?
We shot this in one long afternoon in Atwater Village. No big setbacks except that the DSLR kept threatening to overheat. It was 96 degrees that day. Also, some guy had rented a plane to spray tag “Will You Marry Me?” to the sky outside. A sweet gesture, good for him. But it made JP (our sound guy)’s job a living nightmare. I really hope she said yes.
3. Any funny stories from the making of this film?
Kirstin (Abby)’s wig kept frizzing out between takes, so somehow 90% of my job as director became patting it down. Also — not actually a story at all or even that funny, but our PA, Pete Rowley (yes I’m calling you out), read the “Interviewer” lines during production. But he was really bad, so we had to ADR his ass out. Sorry Pete.
4. Where has your film played? Festivals or other places around the world?
The Short List is our premiere. None outside of cast and crew have seen it, and we have no idea if we have created a work of pure evil. It’s possible.
5. What’s been going on with you, filmmaking wise since the completion of this short? What are you working on next?
I’ve outlined six more episodes for Abby. So let me know what you guys think — “more please” or “please make it stop”. Hint: we won’t stop.
