So the trailer for the upcoming remake of Red Dawn was released this last week. We’ve been following the long progress of this film from my fellow Offender Roger’s blog about his own Red Dawn casting experience to the announcement from the producers that the Chinese villains would be digitally altered to make them North Korean so as not to offend the prospect of a boffo Chinese box office take the good Chinese people. So it seems only appropriate that we should take a moment to acknowledge the trailer:
So here’s what we can apparently expect from Red Dawn:
Cute (mostly) white suburban kids fighting and defeating evil Asian hordes bent on taking over America. Check!
Re-interpretations of the original 1984 version’s infamous scenes—the parachuting invading force, dad being executed in front of his sons by the evil Communists, etc… Check!
Sadistic Asian villains doing all sorts of horribly nasty things to white people (i.e. the aforementioned execution of the dad in front of his kids). Check!
A near-broke nation that can barely feed its own people successfully launching a coordinated military attack on one of the world’s biggest superpowers. Check and double check!
I’m sure in the weeks to come, Red Dawn will receive more than its share of outrage from the Asian American community so I don’t have anything new in that regard to add at this time.
But I will say this…if I do watch this film and it isn’t a hilariously over-the-top comedy based on what I saw in the trailer as outlined above, I want my money back. And the mofos who made this movie better pay for my popcorn and soda too. The super-sized versions too, none of this small shit I can finish before the previews even end.

You know what I think is awesome about this Red Dawn? That Australian Thor is going to defend America from invasion.
somehow “the Australian Invasion” doesn’t have the same ring as “Asian Invaders”
It’s good Roger declined this role in the movie. Funny how they change the invaders from the PRC China to the North Koreans. I guess that did not upset Korean-American actor Will Yun Lee to play a villan Chinese soldier. Until they switch nationalities due to external pressure. Now he gets to be his own ethnicity. Oh well, he is just pawn paying the bills as a minority actor in white dominated Hollywood.
I’d like to see Will Yun Lee and KKKKen Jeong play some Koreans in their movies using the same whoriental antics as they for their constant Chinese caricatures.
By the same token, I’d like to see Matthew Moy play some Chinese caricatures with the accent and buck teeth.
it’s amusing how creativity in the free world manifests itself in the form paranoia.
japan, being the sole asian colonist ever, came up with “code geass”, a work characterizing themselves as victims of the oppressive “britannian empire”
“untergang” depicts the german people as the victim of a single man: hitler. what they left out is that “people” succumbed to the comforting rationalizations of their evil scapegoat.
on the other side of the world, we have usa, involved in almost every war (playing vital roles in most) over the last few decades – conceiving some unlikely (but justifiable) delusions about an invasion from its asian neighbor. **fear of retribution?
reminds me of 1984. 2 minutes hate. why do we do this to ourselves? patriotism is loyalty to real-estate that probably won’t belong to you anyway. u fight, u die – for pig-headed politicians that failed diplomacy.
