Too Scared To Sleep

  • November 25, 2011 4:06 am

My eleven year old son Gabriel has a vivid imagination.

A little too vivid.

For the last four nights, my wife and I have taken turns lying in bed with him until he falls asleep.  The first night, after he had gone to bed, my wife and I, and his older brother Rafael, were still up, watching TV.  We heard Gabriel coming down the stairs and thought he was going to the bathroom.  Instead he stood at the doorway to the den, looking at us.

“What’s wrong, Gabriel?”

“Honey, you look tired, go back to bed.”

He said he wasn’t sleepy.  We pressed a little further – “you have school tomorrow, Gabriel,” “It’s way past your bedtime,” – until he finally said,

At the moment, I’m rewatching Gran Torino for the first time since its theatrical release and it’s instantly reminding me that Clint Eastwood is awesome.  I mean it’s not that I needed to be reminded, but it’s one of those matters where it’s always good that you are.

It’s difficult to remember he doesn’t actually sound like that, you know – that he’s just “acting.”  But with someone like me, a bit of a reality check is always necessary.  A pat on the shoulder, an “It’s okay, boss!” - the sort of thing, yeah!

I wish I was only feigning insanity – haha!

Anyway!  As the Internet’s Greatest Think Tank marches on through the new year, its writers bring you fantastic, ass-busting new stories about confusing counsel from Asian immigrant parents; people wearing bizarre-as-shit panda suits; and

Yes, I just said these stories were “ass-busting.”  They.  Will.  Tear.  Your.  Ass.  UP.

SHOULD HAVE BEEN NOMINATED (#1)

With the 82nd Academy Awards quickly approaching, I thought I would write a series of blogs on my favorite movies that were never nominated for an Oscar in any category.

I have to say that most of the time, the Oscars do recognize good movies in some form or fashion, even if it’s just for great sound. That’s not to say that I always agree with the outcomes or that they haven’t left out a movie that deserved to be in a certain category, but for the most part, the best made movies can boast at least 1 Oscar nomination. Still, I am amazed at how some really deserving films slipped completely from the minds of the members of the Academy.

After perusing my list of outcast movies, I decided that they generally fall into 1 of 3 categories: 1. The film is a genre film (Horror, Action, Thriller, etc.) 2. The film is foreign or 3. The film is just too indie (and therefore probably didn’t have the right Oscar campaign budget.)

So my first pick in the series is a very familiar one and perhaps one of the most iconic films ever made in the genre of Horror:

Inspired by Emmie’s Bert and Ernie Gangsta Rap, I thought I’d dust off this oldie but goodie. It’s fun for everyone!
