Vintage Racist Ads–Asian Flavah

  • April 13, 2011 12:01 am

Our Guest Offender Zohra’s recent post on vintage postcard and matchbox images from Afghanistan made me think of vintage images from right here in the United States–specifically print ads from yesteryear showing less than p.c. images of Asians. So take a walk down memory lane with me to a time when causal racism and stereotyping was as American as apple pie baseball chop suey.

Appearing at a time of strong anti-Chinese sentiment, here’s a product that gets rid of rats with the efficiency of…the Chinese who obviously eat them as well as other pests. “They must go”–not sure if the slogan is referring to the rats or the Chinese.

Anyone know what Chinese Cherry actually tastes like? On second thought, don’t answer that.

Thanksgiving, Island Style

  • November 18, 2009 10:13 pm

As you know, Hawaii’s population is predominantly Asian and Pacific Islander. So, Thanksgiving in Hawaii is pretty similar to how Roger’s Thanksgiving dinners (and I am sure most of my fellow Offenders as well); a hodgepodge of traditional “American” dishes like turkey, mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie, cranberry sauce mixed in with plates of sushi platters, chow mein, spring rolls, sashimi, poke, and fried chicken and chili from Zippy’s. Thanksgiving for me growing up was definitely a family affair. Relatives would gather at my house, there would be a big spread of food, and football and lots of beer would be consumed by my dad, uncles and friends.

Chinky Or Not Chinky: Asians + Rice Farmers = Math Whizzes

  • August 25, 2009 6:31 am

asian-mathWhen Malcolm Gladwell’s book Outliers: The Story of Success came out last year, there was an outcry from some in the Asian American community over one of the chapters which made the argument that the reason why Asians are so good at math had to do with our history as rice farmers. Now, just hearing that out of context does make the statement sound ridiculous and possibly racist. But many of those who found fault with Gladwell’s thesis hadn’t actually read the book so their complaints were based on a superficial (mis)understanding of what Gladwell was trying to say.

Cheese Rice

I LOVE cheese. And I LOVE rice. I used to make cheese rice all the time as a kid. It was a personal specialty, my own weirdo risotto. American cheese, cheddar, mozzarella, or whatever—melted on a bowl of rice. Hot and cheesy. Back then, it was a convenient meal. We always had leftover rice and a block or slice of cheese. (Sadly, also an indication of my future cooking ability.) My parents didn’t think it was right. They didn’t think those things weren’t meant to be together. Cheese on rice? “Looks gross, dear.” I recently heard about Hong Kong’s trendy cheese baked rice and cheered. Looks lovely.
