Hero Complex Film Festival Part II: KNEEL BEFORE ZOD!!!

  • June 16, 2011 10:53 pm

Here’s Part II of my report from the Hero Complex Film Festival presented by the LA Times — essentially it’s a celebration of all things geek, especially comic book films and properties. In Part I, I discussed the double feature of STAR TREK II/STAR TREK (2009), and I have to admit, we sort of geeked out this week on YOMYOMF, to the point that we talked Trek again on Guest Offender Brian’s entry on why STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN is the greatest sequel ever.

My second day at Hero Complex was a double feature of the director’s cut of SUPERMAN and SUPERMAN II: THE DONNER CUT. If you’re not familiar with the Donner Cut, with legendary director Richard Donner in attendance. Gene Hackman. Marlon Brando. Christopher Reeve. Terence Stamp. John Williams rousing score. SUPERMAN had all the ingredients to create a cinematic recipe that to this day, still gives me goosebumps. To see the films on the big screen again, as they were always intended, was amazing.

DC Universe to be rebooted again

  • May 31, 2011 4:48 pm

Some major news came out today in the comic book world. Chief creative officers and co-publishers Geoff Johns and Jim Lee announced that the DC Universe will be rebooted, with new editions reverting back to issue #1. The first book to be released is Justice League of America, bringing back the classic team comprised of Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, The Flash, and Aquaman (the drawing above is a sneak peek of the rebooted team by Jim Lee). From  USA Today:

(Geoff) Johns promises a focus on the interpersonal relationships within DC’s trademark superteam. “What’s the human aspect behind all these costumes?” he says. “That’s what I wanted to explore.

Hawaii 5-0 Shit!

  • November 8, 2010 4:00 am

Forget North Korea or Afghanistan, the new axis of evil is Hawaii.  That’s right, our 50th State may just be the most dangerous place on Earth.  It’s a place where the world’s terrorists come to do their hardest core sinning, whether it be drug running, human trafficking, arms dealing, and/or any other variety of activities that may lead to the end of days.  Don’t let the swaying palm trees, white sand beaches, and hot men and women in thong bikinis fool you, Hawaii is where the shit really goes down.  Well, at least that’s what it seems like every Monday night on CBS.

But before I proceed further, let me just confess that I really love the new Hawaii 5-0 reboot.  It’s the TV show that I look forward to the most every week.  Why?  Well, beyond the fact that Daniel Dae Kim is rather dreamy and has some of the coolest hair in television history, the show just has such a unique look in such a unique local with such a unique cast of characters.  I also love Hawaii as a vacation destination.  In fact, it’s my favorite place to go to decompress, collect my thoughts, and further perfect my skills as a fire knife dancer.  But whatever the reason, I just really enjoy the show.  So much so that I always watch it live.  I don’t DVR it…ever.  Respect.

The series premiere last week of the new Hawaii Five-O reboot won its much coveted timeslot with almost 14 million viewers tuning in. Not too shabby, especially since CBS has been hyping this show all summer with billboards, bus ads, and any poster or flyer all over the Los Angeles area (it is nice to see Daniel Dae Kim on the side of a bus though).

Growing up in Hawaii, FIVE-O was pretty prevalent on TV. I was still very young, but the show was still a first-run series on CBS, with late night repeats through syndication. I remember family friends being on the show, especially if they worked for HPD.

The Verdict on The Karate Kid Remake

  • June 11, 2010 1:58 pm

The remake/reboot of The Karate Kid opens this weekend, with some minor hoopla from mainly Asian American groups who felt this new version made Asians villains and the fact that the film is set in China and in the world of kung-fu, no “karate”, thus making them interchangeable (all Asian, all the same). In the past week alone, there was a Boycott Movement (you can join the Facebook fan page). The argument: nepotism bought Will Smith’s son a film franchise and that the film, in its very existence, sullies the legacy of the late Pat Morita as Mr. Miyagi (our guest blog on this subject by Aly Morita who is spearheading the campaign is now up).

Now, we’ve actually defended this film way back in January; mainly the fact that we’re okay with the title (it’s a known commodity) and looked forward to checking it out. Well, the wait is over. I’ve seen it. And it’s a fun, great film! I’m going to list people, places and things in the film that made it, in my opinion, the sleeper hit of the summer:

Happy Birthday, Greatest American Hero!

  • March 18, 2010 12:59 am

On this very date in 1981, the most awesomest TV show in the history of the world premiered on ABC: The Greatest American Hero!

I was so excited to watch the first two-hour pilot episode that I may have even peed in my pants (a.k.a. the kid equivalent of an orgasm). The premise was brilliant: average high school teacher receives a red suit with super powers from mysterious aliens, but he loses the instruction book leading to all sorts of misadventures as he tries to figure out how the suit works while helping an eccentric, dog biscuit-eating FBI agent solve cases. Here’s the show’s opening credits featuring the most brilliant TV theme song ever to exist in the known universe courtesy of Joey Scarbury:

Wes Anderson Reboots Spider-Man

  • February 10, 2010 11:47 am

Before it was announced that (500) Days of Summer director Marc Webb would take over the Spider-man film franchise, one of the filmmakers rumored to be in the running for the job was indie darling Wes Anderson (Rushmore, Fantastic Mr. Fox). Here courtesy of director Jeff Loveness and company is what Anderson’s take would have looked like. But where’s Bill Murray as the Green Goblin?
