Kristi Yamaguchi: Making Asian American Sports History 20 Years Before, Well, You Know Who

  • February 21, 2012 9:55 pm

Twenty years ago today on February 21, 1992, Kristi Yamaguchi became the first Asian American to win an Olympic Gold Medal in the ladies singles category. Her performance brought her worldwide celebrity and an immense sense of pride within the Asian American community. Not unlike another Asian American athlete experiencing his own fair share of worldwide celebrity and Asian American pride at the moment.

But sadly some things haven’t changed much in 20 years. China may represent the growing “yellow peril” these days, but back in 1992, it was Japan in the role of the threatening Asian superpower. And Yamaguchi wasn’t immune from the ensuing racist backlash against Japan.

In the aftermath of her Olympic victory, there was much talk of how her Japanese heritage would prevent her from winning commercial endorsements and if you thought some of the media’s reporting on Jeremy Lin has bordered on racism (“chink in the armor” anyone?), on the heels of her victory, the media criticized Yamaguchi for everything from not being able to speak Japanese to fellow Japanese figure skater Midori Ito (conveniently ignoring that Yamaguchi was an American, born in California) and taking the victory away from a “real” American (that would be fellow skater Tonya Harding).

The Physics of Queen Yuna

We Offenders are all fans of Yuna Kim, the Gold Medal Winner and reigning world champion of Women’s Figureskating. Roger has professed his love here. Her athletic prowess is unmatchable and she has a few more good years to dominate the sport. Commentators are amazed at her sheer speed. So how does she do it? NYT produced a great segment, breaking down the physics of Yuna’s skating. I particularly love this because it’s told in her own words and is outlined in a very geeky way. Very cool! With this past weekend’s stunning, 5-3 host nation defeat of the Canadian Olympic Hockey Team by the underdog Team USA, instant comparisons were drawn to the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid.  It was there three decades ago this week that an undermanned, undergunned and underexperienced USA Mens hockey team comprised of amateur college athletes shocked the country world — and themselves — with an odds-defying defeat of the mighty Soviet Union hockey team — a team that at the time, was arguably history’s greatest and at worst, above and beyond the current world’s best. It was famously dubbed “Miracle on Ice” and inspired the team to the eventual gold medal.  Testament to the unique power of sport to unify, rally and focus anew a nation, it inspired an America out of its new decade doldrums. It was perhaps the gold medal-winning event of a gold medal-winning events.

I Love You Michelle Kwan…an Ode de Amor

  • February 22, 2010 9:33 am

I love Michelle Kwan.  Always have.  The girl’s got the entire package.  She’s smart, well-spoken, has incredible skin, possesses legs as hard as granite, and is quite a looker.  My only regret in life is that she and I never dated.  I think we would have made a fantastic pair.

Usually I do not pursue a girl that I am interested in.  Like the puma, I am patient.  But I am getting old and wish to experience this relationship before I turn into an oriental raisin with a severe case of male pattern baldness and possible ED issues.  Also, osteoporosis is not a kind dance partner to hot romantic seductions on ice.

So in the spirit of The Secret, I will set the metaphysical dominoes in motion by declaring my desire to date The Great Michelle Kwan in the form of a love poem.  It is my hope that she will respond to my romantic beckonings before the close of the Vancouver winter olympics.  With the extinguishing of one olympic flame, perhaps the flames of love of one of olympic’s greatest champions will spark and be inspired to burn forever bright.  Let the games begin…
