Silence de Nice – a Frenchman’s connection

  • February 28, 2012 10:47 am

Jean Dujardin.  He just won best actor at the 2012 Academy Awards.

But before he was The Artist, he was Brice de Nice.

Before he was this…

Jean Dujardin was this…

I’m not sure Jean Dujardin knew he was on the path to an Academy Award when he was making this music video (posted below).  Which makes this music video all the more amazing to watch.  Sasha Baron Cohen, you’re next!

The Karate Rap!

  • February 5, 2012 8:11 am

YouTube Preview ImageThis is as bad as it looks. I never heard this ’80s one hit blunder but they try to jam pack everything Japanesey to rap rhyme, like “I never have to fight and I’ll tell you why, no one wants to fight a samurai” or “I train in my car, I’m a ninjaa”…. Uh, that last line was kind of reaching. There’s even the Oriental riff for good measure. Either way, watch with adulterated judgement on this Superbowl Sunday. And remember… Kumite!

Top Ten K-Pop Music Videos of 2011

  • December 23, 2011 9:19 pm

I really got into K-pop this year, thanks to the girl group 2NE1, a no nonsense, fun and crazy female quartet who can do it all — rap, R&B, dance, and from different walks of life. They became my starter drug into a burgeoning music industry and genre that is ripe for world domination. And when I mean world domination, I mean thousands of fans from around the world, thanks to open business model that wants to build a worldly fan base. Much like hallyu with the popularity of Korean TV dramas and movies, K-Pop has jumped into the limelight, with not only a Pan-Asian craze in Japan, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines, but also Europe and the US.

2NE1 is the perfect example. With all 4 members (CL, Minzy, Bom, and Dara) fluent in English and Korean, not to also mention conversational Japanese and Tagalog, 2NE1 has become a force to be reckon with, selling out concerts around Asia and also building a fan base in America, and winning the MTV Iggy Best Band in the World Award, where they recently performed at Times Square a couple of weeks ago. They also recorded an American album that was produced by Wil.I.Am, which is set for release sometime in 2012.

So, yeah, I got K-Pop obsessed, and soon enough, I became hooked on watching the latest music videos on Youtube, which rack tens of millions of views in a matter of days. And since I recently blogged about my upcoming top ten random lists of the year, I figured this would be a fun exercise to check out some slickly produced music videos, in which Korea is so known for. So here’s the top ten of the year:

The most badass anime techno music video ever

  • August 5, 2011 12:59 am

Released way back in 1996, the music video EXTRA by Ken Ishii is still one of the most badass music videos I’ve ever seen.YouTube Preview ImageThis gruesome smorgasbord of sadistic, dystopian anime deliciousness was directed by Koji Morimoto, the animation director for AKIRA. You can definitely see the connections.

To me, it’s even better than Daft Punk’s anime phase of the early ’00s, which went for more of an old school Leiji Matsumoto feel. Ah, time to revisit one of their signature music videos. Why not, maybe just ONE MORE TIME? YouTube Preview Image

AWESOME VIDEO: Genki Sudo’s “Machine Civilization”

  • April 2, 2011 12:02 am

It’s hard to make a music video that stands out these days, which is why I’m always pleasantly surprised by Genki Sudo’s work. Sudo always impresses me with his original vision and he’s a true Japanese Renaissance Man to boot. Not only is he a musician who also directs and choreographs videos for his band World Order, but he’s an author with eight books to his name, an actor, an amateur baseball team owner and a retired mixed martial artist/kickboxer.

Check out his latest video for the song “Machine Civilization” below. It’s an amazing and wildly inventive piece that…oh, just watch it already.

how i learned to dance

  • October 1, 2010 8:48 am

As a kid, I sucked at dancing big time.  The mere thought of a school prom or cotillion would make my sphincter twitch and sweat.  Oh how badly I yearned for the skill to seduce my secret crushes with erotic undulations and rhythmic thrusts.  But I could not because I lacked the knowledge of dance.  Where did a young lad, hormones ready to fire, learn the funk and groove?  Thank God for me, Professor Bobby Brown created the ultimate instructional dance video, “Every Little Step”.  I recorded the video, watched it at least 251 times, and danced a hole into the carpet in front of my TV.  I owe a great debt to Bobby Brown.  Thank you Bobby, for giving me knowledge to dance like a brother and the courage to use it in a way no one could refuse it.  I could finally serve.

Below is Wayne Brady’s virtual shot by shot remake of “Every Little Step”, which includes a very dancing challenged Mike Tyson.  I couldn’t stop laughing.  Have a great Friday!

Thanks EMUN for bringing this vid to our attention.

musical contemplation: a-ha’s “take on me.”

  • July 1, 2010 12:00 am

Music is a beautiful thing.  Along with Arrested Development, it is one of the few things that justifies the existence of human civilization.

"Once in the history of time comes a sitcom like Arrested Development.” - EW

The aural magic of voices and instruments creates sounds that transcend race and creed.  When done well, a song can lift our spirits to the highest heights or drag them to the lowest of lows.  That is the power of music.

i googled 'muscular music note' and got that. fuck yeah, internet.

We all know it in our bones when we hear such a song: our blood chills; our face goes numb; and we can’t move.  Thankfully, we can also distinguish between listening to a great song or having a stroke.

OK Go vs. the Giant Machine

  • March 6, 2010 4:41 pm

OK Go, a cool, indie band that gained prominence thanks to their internet sensation music video for “Here It Goes Again”, is back with another inventive doozy. Just released online earlier this week, “This Too Shall Pass” (Rube Goldberg  Machine Version) has already garnered over 5 million views on YouTube. Holy shit! OK Go has become the go-to band for kick ass music vids! Collaborating with director James Frost and  Syyn Labs, a cool outfit that blends art and technology to make nifty contraptions, gizmos and whatzits, produced this amazing video and no one had to do the Truffle Shuffle! Check it out: YouTube Preview Image Rube Goldberg would be proud.

Check out this CNN Report on the making of this music video. Echo Park, reprezent!

Omodaka, 8-bit Electropop band honors Red Light District of yore

  • November 23, 2009 3:07 pm

Check out this cool music video from Omodaka, an experimental music project that fuses 8-bit sounds and beats with motion graphics. Their latest is called Plum Song and is a folk song rendition celebrating the Yoshiwara, or red light district in Edo (now Tokyo) during the Edo Period (1603 – 1868). The end result is a psychedelic fever dream that kind of reminds me of imagery from the ’80s. YouTube Preview Image (Via TokyoMango)
