My New Boyfriend

  • June 14, 2011 3:50 am

I think I’m in love.  His name is Jose Juan Barea.

I call him J.J..  Isn’t he dreamy?

Here’s how I know J.J. and I are meant to be together:

J.J. plays point guard for the 2011 NBA Champion Dallas Mavericks.   I watched him play point guard for the 2011 NBA Champion Dallas Mavericks!

J.J. was born in Puerto Rico. I was born in Spain. Didn’t Spain once colonize Puerto Rico? (there’s one or two things I’d let J.J. colonize now, lemme tell you – and I don’t even know what that means, but I bet J.J. does).

He’s 26! I was once 26!

Helping out the Big Boys

As much as I hate contributing to blatant promotions of multi-billion dollar corporations (I guess then I’m cool with subtle ones), I can’t help it when it comes to Super Bowl ads. I’ve been fascinated ever since I saw Apple’s one time only ‘Lemmings’ commercial as a kid.

And since I’m always up for anything Betty White, we’ll begin with her latest masterpiece:

Judging by the feedbacks, this year’s standout commercials were pretty much unanimous. Joining the Snickers spot are ones for Letterman…

Un-Original Pretenders: SGHS Girls Basketball Coaching Staff

Pass the ball . . . coach!

You know that cliche that sweepingly generalizes Asians as looking far younger than their actual age would suggest? Well, the caretakers of the girls basketball program at San Gabriel (CA) High (home of The Matadors) not only apparently believed that stereotype to be true, they allegedly put their belief to practice.

Just a few days into the new year, San Gabriel High principal Jim Schofield confirmed the mid-December firings of varsity girls coach Manny Flores, junior varsity coach Mark Ho and frosh girls coach Jannie Han after it was discovered that coach Han — a 2007 alum of the school and current student at Cal Poly Pomona – allegedly suited up and played as a member of the JV team in a Dec. 9 road game against El Monte High.  Holy Shiseido counter! What were they thinking?

How many steps can we take?

  • October 19, 2009 2:37 am

This week the NBA did something that will fundamentally change how the game of basketball will be played from now on. It changed the definition of what traveling is. The new rule reads, in part: “A player who receives the ball while he is progressing or upon completion of a dribble, may take two steps in coming to a stop, passing or shooting the ball.”

This is the first time any league, at any level anywhere in the world, has allowed two steps. Why? Anyone that has played basketball knows that you can only take one step. It’s been like that forever and it was simple. If you take two and it’s traveling. So why is the NBA screwing with such a simple rule?
