10 Gift Books For Film Nerds

  • December 1, 2011 11:40 pm

BRIAN

Brian Watanabe wrote THE ROGUES GALLERY, which turned into the hodge-podge cult film OPERATION: ENDGAME starring Rob Corddry, Maggie Q, and Zack Galifianakis. He’s developed scripts for production companies at Fox and Sony, won awards as an advertising copywriter, and changes a diaper like nobody’s business.

Do you collect movie ticket stubs? Can you name three films starring Earnest Borgnine? Can you spot the Billy Zabka action figure in this photo?

If you answered yes, you’re a film nerd. Sadly, it’s an incurable condition, much like herpes or Bieber Fever, just far more enjoyable. But there is some good news: With the recent releases of some amazing, coffee table books, gift-giving for the movie geek has never been easier. So whether you’re Christmas shopping for your favorite development exec or you’re dropping hints to your significant other or spouse, check out these 10 gift books for film nerds.

Hero Complex Film Festival: The KHAAAN!!! Edition

  • June 13, 2011 11:21 pm

If you didn’t know, the geeks have inherited the Earth. Catering to geek culture is a Hollywood mantra now, with superhero movies coming out of the yin yang for summer blockbuster season, graphic novels and other comic properties being picked up and adapted for big screen annihilation and Comic Con becoming the Mecca of Geekdom every year, where every studio will head south to San Diego and evangelize and cock tease the masses in the hallowed Hall H.

But, with news today of several studios opting out of Comic Con presentations this year, because of hype in a vacuum, we may have crossed a tipping point with geek and fanboy-dom.  Case-in-point: The fervor for SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE UNIVERSE was insane at Comic-con last year, which didn’t translate into boffo box-office numbers, where it really mattered (Side note: We Offenders loved this film).

But, in the meantime, geeks still rule (thank the Maker), because the 2nd annual Hero Complex Film Festival presented by the Los Angeles Times, was held this past weekend, and it was hella fun. This film festival was created by LA Times reporter Geoff Boucher, who also runs the Hero Complex blog, a news site on all things geek (movies, TV, comics, games, multimedia).

OK Go, a cool, indie band that gained prominence thanks to their internet sensation music video for “Here It Goes Again”, is back with another inventive doozy. Just released online earlier this week, “This Too Shall Pass” (Rube Goldberg  Machine Version) has already garnered over 5 million views on YouTube. Holy shit! OK Go has become the go-to band for kick ass music vids! Collaborating with director James Frost and  Syyn Labs, a cool outfit that blends art and technology to make nifty contraptions, gizmos and whatzits, produced this amazing video and no one had to do the Truffle Shuffle! Check it out: YouTube Preview Image Rube Goldberg would be proud.

Check out this CNN Report on the making of this music video. Echo Park, reprezent!
