This Commercial is Bloody Brilliant!

  • February 21, 2012 1:50 pm

This has been making the rounds, thanks in part to Community creator Dan Harmon posting this on Twitter and making it go viral. He apparently walked into the writer’s room as everyone was watching this video online. The commercial was created by Australian comedy duo Henry Inglis & Aaron McCann to advertise the Central Institute of Technology, a real West Australian tech college that runs film courses. These guys have been getting a lot of notice in their native Australia, and McCann’s short film, Perished, will premiere at this year’s SXSW. I love this brand of dark comedy, that only the Aussies can pull off. It’s amazing that the school allowed them to advertise them this way. Makes me want to enroll there!YouTube Preview ImageIt kind of reminds me of another darkly funny director from Australia, Nash Edgerton. His short films Spider and Bear have been around the festival circuit and are yes, bloody brilliant and cruelly funny as hell. Oh, and Nash is the brother of Josh Edgerton of Warrior and the upcoming The Great Gatsby.

Mary Christmas: Part Deux

  • December 11, 2011 10:13 pm

Last year, I shared some examples of how Christmas in Asia is celebrated in the Engrish way. Here are some more examples for this holiday season from our friend, the internets (with thanks to sites like LaurainSingapore and Engrishfunny), starting off with a vision of Santa that’s more scary than merry:

Happy holidays and enjoy:

Unfortunately Named Asian Foodstuffs

  • November 1, 2011 11:29 pm

Several of our readers recently sent us this picture of an aptly-named Asian food product:

“Cheap, fast and easy” indeed.

Anyway, I decided this was as good a time as any to post more images of food-related things from Asia where something seems to have gotten lost in translation.

Even More Funny Asian Signs

  • October 19, 2011 12:01 am

Yup, I’m back with yet more examples of Engrish signs gone wrong (see previous examples here and here) ‘cause…hell, do I even need a reason? So check out this batch courtesy of our friends at Weird Asia News:

Unfortunately Named Businesses

  • October 4, 2011 12:01 am

My fellow Offender Anderson stumbled upon the following unfortunately named business and sent me a snapshot:

This reminded me that I had previously blogged about unfortunately named Asian places and products, but I also realized that our friends in the East weren’t the only ones who often had a poor grasp of the English language when choosing the appropriate wording for their signs. Nope, when it comes to the use of Engrish, even our native speakers have proven themselves guilty as the following examples clearly demonstrate:

Funny Animal Signs

This week’s flavah is “nature” so I’ve compiled a collection of signs that shed an interesting light on our animal friends. Happy first full week of fall!

More Unfortunately Named Asian Products & Places

  • September 5, 2011 12:02 am

As I’ve shown in the past, when it comes to Asian to Engrish English translation, things sometimes get lost whether it’s t-shirts or products (to be fair, non-Asians also occasionally experience this problem). So for your Labor Day weekend reading enjoyment, I’m back with more examples; like this aptly named business in the Philippines:

And here are some more:

Unfortunately Named Food Products

  • August 17, 2011 1:28 pm

A couple of years ago while I was in London, I had the good fortune to try some of the native cuisine including a pudding dessert called Spotted Dick.

As you can imagine I had a hard time ordering that aloud without breaking into fits of laughter (a friend had to order for me and apologize to the waitress while I ran to the restroom close to hyperventilating from all the laughing). For the record, Spotted Dick is pretty yummy but suffers from an unfortunate name as evident by all the snickering I can hear out in cyberspace as you were reading over the first part of this sentence: “Spotted Dick is pretty yummy.” Here are some more food products that I’m sure are yummy as well, but also suffer from a poor choice of name:

Kids Write the Darndest Letters!

  • August 2, 2011 12:01 am

I was all set to post a blog describing a recent “misadventure” I had where the police mistakenly thought I was a pimp running a brothel, but I figure I should wait until I’m positive I’m in the clear before doing that. So while I lay low, wait for the heat to die down, google L.A.-based lawyers who do pro bono work for people mistaken for sex industry workers, enjoy these adorably disturbing letters written by kids instead (via our friends at Funny or Die):

Kids Incorrectly Answer Test Questions in the Most Awesome Way Possible

  • May 24, 2011 12:01 am

The good folks at FunnyorDie have compiled the results of some real life tests where the kids not only answered the questions incorrectly, but answered them in the most awesomely incorrect way possible. Now, some may say this is further proof of the failure of our education system. To that, I say, “What the hell are you smoking?!” Seeing these should actually fill you with optimism about our children’s future. Because what other country could produce such insanely creative thinkers than the kids responsible for these. True, these youngsters may not grow up to cure cancer or be President, but I can ensure you that there’s already an unpaid internship waiting for them here at YOMYOMF. God bless America!

Now, check them out:

Back with more photos from Asia of signs, products, t-shirts and other items demonstrating that for some, English is a yet-to-be-acquired skill. Enjoy!

Proof Facebook Still Exists in the Future World of ‘Star Trek’

  • March 10, 2011 12:01 am

Looks like Facebook is here to stay for awhile ‘cause according to the video below (from Black Moon), it’s still around in the 23rd Century and the crew of the Enterprise in the original Star Trek are using it for pretty much the same reasons we use it today. So if you’ve ever wondered what Spock was looking at when he’d put his eyes up to that viewfinder-y thingie:

Your answer awaits right here after the jump:
