An Open Letter to the Children of America About the Importance of Diversity in the Media

  • March 10, 2012 10:19 pm

Here at YOMYOMF, we value the feedback from loyal readers like yourselves. That’s why when several of you suggested we try to write blogs that were more educational and blogs that could teach and inspire our youth, I thought—yes, that is a good and noble idea. So I vow to take this suggestion to heart and post more blogs…for the children.

And in that spirit–today, I write about an issue that is not only dear to my heart, but that is also very important in the multicultural society we live in…the lack of diversity in the mainstream media. And particularly in film and television. Furthermore, I’ll discuss this subject in a way that will allow even the youngest and stupidest child to understand. And further furthermore, in order to make sure everything I write is accurate and appropriate, I have asked a representative from a well-respected teachers’ organization to read over this post and make any necessary corrections. So let’s fucking do this! So let us proceed in the proper manner…

Support Your ‘Community’

Finally got a chance to catch up on the latest episode of NBC’s Community this weekend and it reminded me again how great this show is. Normally I wouldn’t blog to just let readers know that I think a TV show is awesome, but in light of last week’s news that Community is going on a temporary “hiatus” come 2012, I’m doing just that.

For those not in the know, the show isn’t technically cancelled. It’s just being placed on hold until some undetermined time in the future when NBC will bring it back on the air. So on the surface that doesn’t sound so bad. But what often happens when an already low-rated series is benched is that its momentum is lost, people forget about it and when it does return, it’s often with little marketing muscle in a timeslot that almost guarantees it dies. If cancellation is the equivalent of shooting a show in the head and putting it quickly out of its misery, benching a show is the equivalent of shooting it in the gut and watching it die a prolonged and painful death.

No Love For “Valentine’s Day”

We’re all familiar with the popular saying about love being the   universal language. And here I thought the universal   colloquial was laughter but, digress I must. It’s the cusp of a Valentine’s Day weekend and we’re talking about amour’s transcedence: Its  wondrously unique ability to bridge divides; to invalidate differences — regardless of how significant or petty — into 3rd class irrelevance. Love is the sum total of an equation pairing two sides of egalitarian respect and adoration. It is, borrowing a popular aphorism I used to bite regularly when writing syrupy love cards to girlfriends, “an exclusive fan club with only two members.”  I got a lot of love for love.

So what’s wrong with this picture?

Thanks for Being San Francisco

I know Thanksgiving is over, but I just wanted to say thank you San Francisco, I love you.  I love your skyline, your clanging cable cars, your steep hills, your incredible vistas, and most of all, your diversity.  I grew up going to Chinatown for live blue crabs and sitting embarrassed on the bus as the crabs tried to claw their way out of the paper bags.  I sat on the bus listening to 15 languages being simultaneously shouted across the aisles.  I celebrated childhood with either Rose or Black Sesame ice cream from Polly Ann’s Ice Cream in the Outer Sunset, or Macapuno or Corn ice cream from Mitchell’s Ice Cream in the Mission.  I spent my high school years ghost-hunting in Golden Gate Park looking for the White Lady (a ghost who’s apparently still searching for her child) at Stow Lake
