Kyoto Filmmakers Lab

  • January 3, 2011 5:10 pm

I had the great pleasure of being invited to attend the 3rd annual Kyoto Filmmakers Lab (KFL for short), which was held last month. Essentially a filmmaker’s boot camp, 20 participants are chosen from an open call, and are split into two groups. Each group must work on a short film. The catch is, the films are jidaigeki and to be shot on the existing sets at the Toei-Kyoto and Shochiku-Kyoto Studios respectively.

Beat It (Chinese Communist Party Version)

We all know that China has some major might. They can move mountains and do what they want when it comes to increasing the size of their economy, the Beijing Olympics, climate change, you name it. China reveres its rich, cultural history, even rewriting it for that matter. Check out this revised version of Michael Jackson’s BEAT IT: YouTube Preview Image

Of course this is all in jest. The clips are from Long March Song Cycle. The Long March was a massive military retreat undertaken by the Red Army of the Chinese Communist Party, under the eventual command of Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai, escaped in a circling retreat to the west and north, which reportedly traversed some 12,500 kilometers (8,000 miles) over 370 days. Since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, the Long March has been glorified as an example of the Communist Party’s strength and resilience. The Long March Song Cycle was first performed in 1966.

So some of you may know I work for a film festival.  In one of my very first posts for this blog, I highlighted a short film of merit that needs to be seen. Well, I am bringing it back this spotlight, baby! I’m going to highlight some of my favorite short films that I’ve seen in the last few years.

Here’s a short film from a young Brooklyn-based director named Ray Tintori called DEATH TO THE TINMAN. Check out this brilliant short film, which is in two parts. Part I: YouTube Preview Image Part II: YouTube Preview Image Keep in mind, this film was made when magical realism wasn’t overused in so many films I see nowadays.
