Chinese Company Introduces Helen Keller Sunglasses

  • May 23, 2012 1:17 am

Xiamen Jinzhi, a company based in China, is causing a stir with the recent introduction of its line of Helen Keller sunglasses.

Yes, it’s a line of stylish glasses named after the blind and deaf activist being marketed with the tagline: “You see the world, the world sees you”.

Uh…OK.

A spokesman for the company said they were aware that Keller is blind, but they named the glasses after her more for her “philanthropic spirit” than anything to do with her condition.

Uh…OK.

This Chinese Woman is a Literal Ballbuster

  • April 27, 2012 10:13 pm

A male shopkeeper in the Chinese town of Haikou died last week when a confrontation with a woman resulted in testicular asphxiation. Or to put it in layman’s terms, the woman grabbed the man’s balls and squeezed really hard until he died.

According to reports, the unidentified woman tried to park her scooter in front of the man’s store so she could pick up her child from school, but the man wouldn’t let her. This led to an argument, which led to violence, which led to the unfortunate death.

Chinese Chicken has Four Legs

  • March 24, 2012 10:09 pm

Apparently, they really do have everything in China. Exhibit A—a chicken with four legs:

A woman in the Chinese city of Changsha discovered the mutated chicken after she brought it home from the supermarket. The woman was understandably freaked out and said she would throw the chicken out.

However, a professor from Central South University of Forestry and Technology has told reporters the chicken is most likely safe to eat. He said the mutation was probably caused in the embryo stage from “radioactivity in the living environment” or the “high meta level” in the feed.

The Perfect Tool for Chinese Pickpockets? Chopsticks!

  • March 8, 2012 11:16 pm

As the following video shows, eating your food is just one of the many functions of the chopstick. And apparently, the proper response to seeing pickpockets stealing from people using their chopsticks is not to call the police, but to videotape them and provide running commentary:

Sexiest HIV Awareness Ad Ever

  • March 3, 2012 11:11 pm

YouTube Preview ImageThis goes out to all the KTV (Chinese moniker for karaoke) and hostess bar girls out there! Using protection will “allow you to move forward without losing steam” and also “walk down the street, carefree.” Hmm… kind of like Mary Tyler Moore? This Malaysian Chinese ad is pure genius, especially the part where the ham sap los are rapping about who is faster than a Ferrari This is a pretty progressive awareness campaign, filled with randy fun, doesn’t take itself seriously, but at the same time, drives the point across.

Hmm, I wonder if there’s an Asian Rush Limbaughwho’s enraged right now and using the slut word a lot on the air.

The Flowers of War

  • January 24, 2012 5:48 pm

When I was visiting my family for Chinese New Year in Vancouver, I got to watch The Flowers of War by Zhang Yimou on a (most likely) pirated DVD that my father had. The screener I saw was incredibly dark and high contrast. It also was two seconds out-of-sync during the last hour of the movie. On top of that, the cover said the movie was 97 minutes but it turned out two be 2 and a half hours. I was actually dreading to watch the movie as I have heard mixed things about it. My friend at the Golden Globes said it was essentially a Chinese propaganda film. A Chinese friend laughed at how ridiculous one of the plot points was (I will eventually have to talk about it so SPOILER ALERT ahead).

Don’t put down Asians, Mr. Romney

  • January 6, 2012 1:28 am

Hilarious clip of GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney and Senator John McCain at a rally, where a Chinese woman tells them that they are “putting Asians down” with their anti-China rhetoric. She then goes and says Reagan trickle down economics has still left her “tin can” empty.YouTube Preview ImageI like how Romney then goes and implies, “I love Asians!”

Why the Death of Kim Jong Il Means More Bad News for the ‘Red Dawn’ Remake

  • December 23, 2011 5:03 pm

Regular YOMYOMF readers know that we’ve been following the saga of the upcoming remake of the 1980s film Red Dawn since the early days of our blog when Offender Roger had his own not so pleasant experience with the project.

The original film was about a group of suburban American high school kids who must single-handedly fight off a Russian military invasion. In the remake, the bad guys are were the Chinese coming to collect on the huge U.S. debt. But the film has met with numerous roadblocks and delays including a post-production race change of the bad guys from Chinese to North Korean; presumably because the producers realized it’d be a bad idea to piss off China and its potentially huge box office profits (although the producers insist the change was made because some “real smart person” told them North Korea is a more “realistic” threat to the U.S. Uh…OK?).

However, the film finally received some good news this fall when it was picked up for distribution and even given a release date for November 2012. But alas, this positivity may only be temporary with the death of North Korean leader Kim Jong Il last week.

Why is this a bad thing for the film?

Old Chinese people cover Lady Gaga’s BAD ROMANCE

  • November 7, 2011 8:57 pm

YouTube Preview ImageThis performance was televised on popular satellite station HUNAN TV to hundreds of millions of viewers. I don’t get the symbolism of young, nubile girls in mini-skirts playing traditional instruments juxtaposed with what looks like senior citizens living in a retirement home. And how does Lady Gaga fit in? Maybe the old folks are the Chinese equivalent of the Young@Heart chorus? Sometimes, I don’t get China. Anyway, enjoy…

Gay Chinese Man Denied Divorce From His Sham Lesbian Wife

  • October 17, 2011 11:24 pm

I was talking to a gay friend over the weekend who is considering marrying his lesbian friend so he can start a family. I told him I thought this might be a bad idea unless he wants to live in what will most likely turn into a real-life Adam Sandler movie. But fortunately, in a fortuitous bit of timing, the internet has once again come through to back me up.

It seems that a gay Beijing man named Wang married a lesbian woman with the plan that the two of them would have twins and each would raise one of the twins. Well, as so often happens with the best laid plans, the lesbian wife only gave birth to one child and she decided she wanted to raise her child alone; cutting Wang out completely. So Wang filed for divorce, but a Chinese court has rejected his request because apparently there is a law in that country that forbids a husband from filing for divorce if his wife is pregnant or within the one-year period after she’s given birth.

Chinese Kindergarten Sex Ed Dolls are Surprisingly Anatomically Correct

  • September 9, 2011 12:01 am

I don’t remember a lot of the things I learned when I was in kindergarten, but one thing I definitely didn’t learn is this: how pubic hair looks on the adult male genitalia. But you know which kindergarteners will learn that lesson? The students at the Yaolan School in the central Chinese city of Zhengzhou.

Yup, the students there get to be schooled in sex education (something else I wasn’t taught in kindergarten) through the use of these anatomically correct dolls:

Chinky or Not Chinky: Chinese Think Americans are Dumb Edition

  • September 7, 2011 12:01 am

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the rest of the world sometimes doesn’t have the best impression of America (the fact that we even refer to ourselves as Americans when there are plenty of other nations in the Americas should be reason enough to hate us). And to hear that some in the international community think that America the United States is dumb shouldn’t come as a shock either. After all, we have unleashed these things on the world:

But that’s not the reason why Yaxue Cao over at the Seeing Red in China blog thinks the Chinese specifically think we’re dumb as a doorknob (you can read her full post here). This is:

To many Chinese, Americans don’t have xin-yan…they trust what you say, and they believe you are doing what you say you are doing. For that, they are dumb.
