The Power Couple

The Film Festival I work at was a success. It was a 30th anniversary year, and we had some dignitaries ranging from famed Chinese director Zhang Yimou to stars from True Blood. But what was truly an honor was bringing back Roger and Chaz Ebert back after a five year absence and to present them with one of our visionary awards, for their tremendous work in the perpetuation of film criticism, which we’ve discussed around here as sorely lacking in today’s landscape, especially in the lack of Asian American film critics in general.

Teenage Wasteland

With the passing of author J.D. Salinger last week, I revisited his seminal novel, The Catcher in the Rye. The last time I read it was back in high school (as pretty much every American teen in English class). I revisited the character of Holden Caulfield, who became an icon for teenage rebellion. How did the book stand up, 15 years later for me? It was still an enjoyable read, quick and the prose was witty and snappy. And although Holden was a spoiled rich WASP who ran away from boarding school and full of ennui over his privileged life, teen angst is a universal experience, especially for a middle class kid from Hawaii (me).

When “Red Dawn” attacks…

For the past 14 years, I have been an actor in Hollywood.  As with the career of any actor (famous, infamous, or unknown), it has been a roller coaster of ups, downs, victories, and losses.  There is a reason why most parents would not encourage their child to become an actor.  It is, at best, a completely unpredictable affair and most certainly not a meritocracy.  When people ask me what it’s like to work as an actor in Hollywood, my best answer goes something like this – imagine the superficial, social politics of junior high…and with that, you have the key, critical success factors necessary to excel in Hollywood.  Basically, it’s the exact opposite moral values that mom and dad tried to teach you as a kid.  When asked what it’s like to be an Asian American actor in Hollywood, my best answer is – imagine being a white guy, going to China to be an actor, and expecting to have a career like Chow Yun Fat.  Good luck round eye.
