This is what it’s like in a Filipino household during a Pacquiao fight.

  • November 12, 2011 11:22 am

By and large, it will be a family party and if there is anyone that isn’t family, they’re in a significant minority because Filipinos have lots of kids. The party will be scheduled to start at – for tonight’s fight at least – 6pm.

Everyone will arrive at 7.

There will be a lot of food – one of the dishes will be lumpia – and you will be harangued at least nine different times about how you have gotten so skinny since they last saw you and how you need to eat some more kanin. You will not leave hungry and you will take some BBQ home.

WHAT I LEARNED ON YOMYOMF THIS WEEK – JUNE 4 – 10, 2011

  • June 11, 2011 12:00 am

What I Learned on YOMYOMF This Week is a capsule of the week’s blogs with sarcastic commentary from Yours Truly (that’s me!).  If you’ve been busy and missed out on a couple of our daily gems, this is a perfect way to catch up.

But seriously – what was more important than reading YOMYOMF?

This week, YOMYOMF’s got blind Asian women; bigoted Smurfs; and great, non-sexual advice for new graduates.

You really can’t get that anywhere else.

SAF SEEKING… CHARM SCHOOL:

““I think that it must be you.” He smiles into my eyes.

Oh no! He’s flirting with me! I’m terrible at flirting! Okay, so he’s only 23 and I could have given birth to him if I had been even remotely sexually active in high school (I wasn’t) so he’s harmless and nothing’s going to happen but STILL!”

I thought the younger the mark, the better the prize, right?  Or is that just with hunting animals?

Man, there’s a lot I need to learn.

R.I.P. MY INTEREST IN VIDEO GAMES.:

In which I describe how my video game fixation died with L.A. Noire.

Dispatch from Berlin: Take a Chance on Jackie Chan

  • February 19, 2010 3:05 am

Guten tag from Berlin! I’m currently wrapping up my annual jaunt at the Berlinale (Berlin Film Festival). Watched a lot of films and warming up my lower extremities because of one of the coldest winters in Berlin in a decade. For such a well run, beautiful place with rich history, their city services in salting sidewalks and streets is left to be desired. The sidewalks are ice rinks and many people have slipped and fell around the festival. A poor Indian film buyer actually broke his leg on his first day at the fest and had to travel back to India the next day because he was immobile.

The Rock N’ Roll Hall Of Fame Class of 2010

  • September 23, 2009 8:10 pm

rock_hall_of_fameThe most recent crop of nominees for the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame were announced today (see the complete list here). From these twelve nominees, five will be selected in January and officially inducted into the hall at a star-studded ceremony in March 2010. I think all of the nominees are worthy and each of them has created music that has impacted my life. But here are the five that have meant the most to me.

Sungha Jung: A Boy And His Guitar

  • September 12, 2009 11:23 pm

Recently, a friend turned me onto the guitar stylings of this South Korean kid named Sungha Jung who wants to be a guitarist when he grows up. He’s only thirteen but I’d say he’s well on his way toward his goal. Here are a few clips of him playing.
