So some of you may know I work for a film festival. In one of my very first posts for this blog, I highlighted a short film of merit that needs to be seen. Well, I am bringing it back this spotlight, baby! I’m going to highlight some of my favorite short films that I’ve seen in the last few years.
Here’s a short film from a young Brooklyn-based director named Ray Tintori called DEATH TO THE TINMAN. Check out this brilliant short film, which is in two parts. Part I:
Part II:
Keep in mind, this film was made when magical realism wasn’t overused in so many films I see nowadays.
It had a very successful festival run in 2005 and really put this guy on the map. A unique and twisted take on the Tinman motif seen through the prism of smalltown America, religion/nihilism, it was shot in beautiful 16mm black and white. It’s whimsical and dark, influenced by German expressionism and the work of Guy Maddin. Oh yeah, and the female lead is a dead ringer for Kim Deal of The Pixies and The Breeders.
Tintori is currently a prolific music video and commercial director, and what seems somewhat exclusively for the folktronica duo MGMT. I especially like this music video for the song KIDS:
And let me tell ya, that poor toddler in the video is surely scarred for life. Plus, cameo by Joanna Newsom!
Anyway, can’t wait to see Tintori’s next narrative piece.

I really enjoyed this piece Anderson. I feel like I learned something and know just a smidgin more about the film world.
And I loved the video! Poor kid. Guess someone had to suffer so mama could pay her bills.
More film please!
