What began a year ago as some idle chat about a possible show idea over noodles with Offender Justin turned into a chunk of my life, and a little artifact called “Reality Reboot,” which I’m very proud of – the experience, that is, as well as the artifact. Missing it already. On that note, here’s the last thing I learned about directing.
My co-director Robert Consing calls it “the epiphany.”
10. The adrenaline rush – savor it! You’ve just had the chance to go to war, but without bullets whizzing past your head. Enjoy it! You will feel alive, excited, pumped, and exhausted, defeated, triumphant (often within the same five minutes – literally, as you wait for that phone call back letting you know if some uber important piece of equipment will arrive on time; or whether an actor might need to cancel on you last minute; or the goose bumps you feel on the last day of shooting as the camera rises up and catches the neon just so). I’m not yet sure how I’ll return to civilian life. If there’s such a thing as good PTSD, this is it.
At the risk of sounding like I’m delivering a perfunctory awards speech, I want to acknowledge a debt of gratitude I owe to the YOMYOMF folks behind the scenes, without whom I would not be able to drone on…and on…and on…and on….like this. Phil, Deepa, Sal, Justin, Srdjan, Leila, Anson, Jerome: thanks for rolling the dice on me. Thanks for your all your input, support and babysitting.
You were the kiddie bumpers at the bowling alley that kept me from going into the gutter.
And lastly, another big giant heaping THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU, to everyone else who kept me out of the gutter:
(note: the alignment of text below is not a screw up; it is a style choice, director’s perogative, and part of the integrity of my vision; that it happened to be facilitated by my ineptitude with the computer is pure coincidence)
