I have been challenged to write about Inception once a week until the end of the year. Not that this really changes anything because I was planning on doing that anyway.
Last week, I discussed the various memes Inception has spawned. One of them that’s gaining a lot of traction is Arthur x Eames.
If there’s anything fans love to do, it’s fleshing out scenarios they wish had happened within their objects of fandom, whether it’s Star Trek or Star Wars or Starman.
Often times, the focus of these efforts and works is the romantic relationships in the story. What if Morpheus schtupped Trinity? Or Frodo stormed Sam’s gates? Or Rachel bonked Marcel?
These are questions the world will never get a canonical answer for. But that’s what the Internet is for.
Inception – no longer just a simple idea in Christopher Nolan’s mind – now belongs to the world at large, and so it is no exception to this obsession. And if there’s any relationship fans want to come true within the film’s mythos, it’s definitely Arthur and Eames.
I suppose one could read a homosexual subtext in the bickering exchanges between the two in the film, but these people definitely saw it and they are running with it. Running wild.
Seriously though, did anyone else interpret their relationship like that? If we were going strictly by what we know for sure, Arthur would have to be at least bisexual cause he looked like he enjoyed kissing Ariadne. and Eames, well – he did flirt with Saito in the elevator.
And it doesn’t stop with captions either – original art pops up too!
And then, if you’re willing to invest more time into this, here’s some fan fiction.

Inception bromance. Forget the totem…

Gonna look for the homosexual subtext next time. It’s like an onion, Inception.
Can I just say one thing?
Spock and Kirk.
Okay, two:
Leela and Fry.
Nolan recently said in an interview that he wanted Eames to be sort of like Handsome Bob from RockNRolla, who, hello, was as gay as the day is long. Then he referenced another gay character – I forget which. ^_^
Maybe that’s retrofitting in response to the fandom, but yeah, totally canon now. ^_^
[...] Whether it was seriously dissecting supposed plot holes or introducing (some) people to the fan-fiction coupling of Arthur and Eames, it was always my intent to make this challenge, at the very least, an entertaining distraction for [...]
