Childhood memories are like freeway exits. You always get off for a detour and revisit the great ones but you also tend to drive by and just watch the not so great ones. One exit I always get off on are these delicious ice cream sandwiches called It’s It. Its founded in San Francisco, where I was born and raised and could almost be found in any grocery store in the Bay Area. Its two oatmeal cookies with ice cream in the middle made into a sandwich, all dipped into dark chocolate. My favorite flavor is the mint one, then vanilla.
I have so many fond events in life that revolve around the It’s It dessert. One of my first dates I went on, we bought some it’s it and took it to the beach. Not so cool having chocolate all over my mouth. Another was in 1989 after school, I was buying some milk and a mint it’s it and a huge earthquake hit the Bay Area. We know what happened after that. Another time in elementary school I was buying one only to realize my friend had stole his and left me to serve his crime with the store owner. One final moment was in middle school for my first potluck, I thought it would be cool to bring some it’s it to share. Little did I know, they were suppose to be kept frozen. Live and learn. I recently also heard you can get some free It’s It with an order of a Papa John’s pizza. I could be wrong but that sounds like an awesome combo.
So what’s your favorite childhood dessert and what kind of fond memories does it remind you of?

Having grown up in the Bay Area as well, I love It’s It too. My second favorite was the Nestle icecream drumstick.
Oh my gosh! The It’s It! I LOVED It’s It! I’ve kinda outgrown the flavor (vanilla was my fav) because I remember I could never FINISH one as a child and would feel sick after a while! (They were GINORMOUS!)
In first grade, Joseph A.’s dad worked at the It’s It factory and for his birthday brought It’s It for the whole class… that was a great day. I stlll drive by the It’s It factory south of the airport… I wondered if anyone still ate those things…
beef bowl.
i was at Cal Tech for summer school during my high school days.
met this really hot filipino girl. i wanted burger king. she suggested beef bowl (which i never heard of before then). being an agreeable fellow, i agreed to try beef bowl. we went, bought, brought back to the dorm, ate our beef bowl and then proceeded to make out big time with soy sauce breath. it was awesome. the beef bowl was good too
Love the It’s It! Vanilla my fave. In h.s., used to work in a movie theater that stocked this treat. That was my dinner.
Can I get a what-what for Taisun Grass Jelly? Nothing cools you better on a hot summer day!
Us Dodger fans had our own version in Cool-A-Coo but, sadly, it’s no more and now we have to make do with It’s It. Oh, and Diddy Riese. Bomb Pops — the kind with the patriotic three colors — were … the bomb.
This is also my fave childhood dessert. I didn’t realize how much it meant to me until I moved out of SF to go to college in San Diego. Those were painful years of longing for It’s Its and dutch crunch bread.
WOW, those of us growing up 10 millions miles away from It’s Its missed out.
there are tons of favorite desserts, but right now I’m thinking about almond junket. mmmm. firm white almond-tasting jello-ey squares, little mandarin oranges and maraschino cherries, served up in little glass bowls. it reminds me of guests coming over for Chinese New Year or whatever holiday was going on. this was especially exciting to me, since it meant I wouldn’t be scolded or frowned upon for a few hours, while my parents were distracted.
