As an Asian American, some of you might be thinking that Arizona’s new legislation that allows law enforcement officers to demand to see identification from anyone they “suspect” of being in the country illegally doesn’t affect you. You may be thinking this is more of a Latino issue. But the reality is if you think being Asian in Arizona makes you safe, you’re sadly mistaken.
Just look at the facts: even before this racist law came into being, 332 Chinese in Arizona were arrested on immigration-related charges in 2009 (way up from just 38 in 2008). One-fourth of the Asian population in that state is classified as “limited-language proficient” which means the cops could very easily mistake your FOB ass for an illegal FOB ass. Ten percent of the 10-12 million undocumented aliens in the U.S. are Asian so you can bet they’ll be keeping their in-bred hick eyes on the yellow as well as the brown (and forget about it if you’re Filipino–no one’s going to believe you’re Asian anyway, they’ll just automatically deport your ass back to Mexico). I have faith that the good people of this country—of all races and persuasions—will eventually overturn this law, but if you’re Asian and currently living in Arizona, what do you do in the meantime to keep from being unjustly questioned, detained and/or deported?
Well, my friend, I’m afraid you only have one real choice. You have to blend in with the “majority.” In short, you have to out white the whites. You have to become whiter than Wonder Bread vacationing in the Arctic. You have to become whiter than the CW’s prime-time line-up. You have to become so white that if you ran into Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa, they’d be like, “Damn, you so white!” “Darn, you possess even more distinctly Caucasian attributes than we do.”
So how do you do this? Let me offer some helpful tips:
CHANGE YOUR NAME AND THE NAMES OF EVERYONE IN YOUR FAMILY
A foreign-sounding name will instantly raise red flags so you must pick the whitest name possible. But don’t be fooled into thinking names like Joe or Mary will protect you. Those are the equivalent of the generic brands of toilet paper that promise to do the job, but only shred into pieces as it makes contact with your ass. Nope, you need your Charmin a.k.a. super white names like Wellington, Nevin, Donovan, Marie Antoinette, Blake, Paris or Eva Braun. I challenge you to find one person in all of American history with any of those names who has ever been deported.
PRETEND TO EAT WHITE PEOPLE FOOD
Again, you need to be careful here. For many Asians, tacos and burritos might be considered “American” food, but enjoying them in Arizona can lead to a slow boat ride back to China. So you have to be cautious and only eat food that can’t be mistaken as “ethnic” in any way. Which leaves you with basically two choices: fondue and crepes.
I guarantee you that no one who is in this country illegally has ever so much as been within 100 yards of either fondue or crepes. “Amigo, come to mi casa for some cerveza, tequila and fondue” is a line that has never been uttered in the history of recorded time. Even if you can’t actually bear to bring yourself to eat this shit, if a cop stops you and asks for identification, just casually mutter under your breath, “Gosh darn it, I’m going to be late for Wellington and Paris’ fondue and crepe party” and watch as Mr. Police Officer apologizes for the inconvenience and leaves you alone.
DEMAND SCHOOLS GET RID OF THEIR ETHNIC STUDIES PROGRAMS
Oh wait…no need to do this. Already taken care of. Thank you once again, Arizona.
DON’T RUN
If jogging or running is your main source of exercise, you’re going to have to stop cold turkey. The only people who run in Arizona are those trying to avoid getting hit by a jeep or shot by a sniper while crossing the border. You don’t want to be the victim of mistaken identity and risk being hit by that jeep or shot by that sniper. You have to be careful even when you’re just walking. Asians tend to walk faster than white people and that could mark you as an illegal. Slow down and think, “how would a white person move?” Walk Strut down the sidewalk as if you own the world. Be confident, keep your head up high, lead with your crotch and exude an aura of “I’m your typical bad ass American and I don’t take shit from no one. So pass the fondue, bitch!”
LEARN TO LOVE THE THINGS WHITE PEOPLE LOVE
Here’s a partial list of things you better start loving: Abercrombie & Fitch, ice hockey, political bumper stickers, Taylor Swift, following Ashton Kutcher on Twitter, The Last Airbender, medical marijuana, dissing Ashton Kutcher movies, backpacking through India to find yourself, Adam Carolla, post-modern irony, Japanese porn, Sarah Palin, hacky sacks, Precious: Based On The Novel Push By Sapphire, mayonnaise, accepting government bail-outs…

FINALLY, MOVE OUT OF ARIZONA
White flight, baby! Do you really want to live in a state with so many…foreigners? I hear Alaska’s nice.
And remember that the more things change, the more they stay the same. Give it up for Arizona circa 1991:

BOYCOTT Nazi-zona.
Funny website you suggested/linked.
Great for a dose of white-culture.
Thanks. ;->
Wow! What a stupid blog. If you like mayonaise, Sarah Palin, The Last Airbender and etc. then you are White. If you’re Asian, you don’t like those things. You don’t have a logical premise. BTW, I’m Asian. I live in Arizona.
Some of those Chinese arrested came to Arizona from Mexico illegally.
That’s the spirit TD! You totally got the hang of it!
Re: ^ (if you’re Filipino–no one’s going to believe you’re Asian anyway)
OUCH, that hurts. I got a drop of Chinese blood as well but that was from an ancestor a few hundred years ago. Do I have to have chinky eyes to be “ASIAN”?
Hey, Phil oppa, why do you always exclude us Filipinos in your “list” of all things Asian? I’m going to ask Beverly unnie to spank you! T____T
Hey SuperFanGirl, sorry don’t mean to exclude but in this case, let’s be real–if you’re Filipino in Arizona, folks are probably going to think Mexican before they think Asian. And is a Bev spanking supposed to be punishment?
Don’t forget to put a confederate flag sticker on your car even though you live in a state that was never in the confederate. Another silly thing white people do. Helps you blend in more.
@TD: That’s the spirit, cheer for the arrest of those sneaky border-crossing chinks! Now THAT’S thinking like a white person.
If Philip’s advice doesn’t work, you can get also one of these patented White People Masks:

Philip for President!
And if you follow this list of tips, you turn into…. Michelle Malkin (aiieee!).
@MacLu: I thought your statement was a racist statement. I’m an American and my heritage is Viet Nam. I followed the laws. My family and I had to wait for at least a year for the immigration papers to be approved before we were able to come to America. You don’t have to be White to think safety and security for your family and nation. The sheriffs were doing their duty and enforcing the laws by arresting the illegal immigrants. The point is our borders are not secure. Anyone can cross it and some of them are not Mexican or Canadian coming here looking for jobs.
OMG Public Enemy! This is hilarious! Thank you!!!
@TD: It’s not about the legality of the immigrants. Philip is talking about the new Arizona laws because it mandates that police make attempts to determine the immigration status of a person if reasonable suspicion exists that the person is in the U.S. illegally. In other words, racial profiling. That’s messed up, no matter if you are here legally or not.
@TD: Enjoy carrying around your papers to prove your legal immigration status!
@ MacLu: Don’t you think racial profiling sometimes is necessary to weed out the bad guys/gals from the good guys/gals? Not all immigrants who come to the U.S. are for a better a life or education. However, the AZ Immigration Law prohibits racial profiling. It is a law about immigration enforcement and not about racial profiling. This law mirrors the Federal Immigration Law and section 834b of California Penal Code on immigration enforcement. Here’s the website if you want to read more: http://www.washingtontimes.com/weblogs/watercooler/2010/may/15/audio-interview-la-city-councilman-attacks-ariz-la/
From what I read, Philip assumed the police would stop either Hispanics or Asians with brown or yellow skin tones. By writing this blog, he has already racial profiled who and what the illegal immigrants might look like. Has Philip ever thought that there are illegal immigrants with white skin tone?
If Philip and you are against racial profiling, please stop the racial profiling with yourself first. Please stop the stereotypings of what the White people likes and dislikes, what the Philipinos look like because the ones that I know do not look like Hispanics at all and being unjustly detained, how does Philip know that these people are/will be held unjustly? This is rediculous. Assumptions are not facts and they are not strong arguments for his premise.
@John: We all have to carry our driver licenses when we drive and leave the house. If you’re stopped by the police for a traffic violation, you need to show your ID, car registration and insurance. Plus, if you’re a legal resident, don’t you need to carry your green card all the time?
to clarify things, perhaps Dan Fanelli should do other genius ads for every other ethnic group on earth. then we’ll know exactly what each looks like and the potential naughty things they have a natural penchant for doing…

@TD: Suit yourself. Just be sure to report back about your experiences if you get stopped.
@TD –
The law may say that it is not supposed to be used for racial profiling, BUT……the reality is that persons that don’t look western European or that aren’t blonde-haired & blue-eyed automatically get scrutinized just that much more.
PAPERS!! Where are your PAPERS??!!
Personally, I’m fine with getting carded…..AS LONG AS **EVERYONE** IS SUBJECTED TO THE SAME TREATMENT. But, unless there is a FEDERAL MANDATE that US-citizens MUST carry around their US-passports and/or US-birth certificates and/or US-citizenship/naturalization papers, I’m not making my 4y/o daughter cary those on her 24/7.
BTW, a state-issued driver’s license is NOT proof of citizenship/immigration status.
I think there needs to be immigration reform and better enforcement, but Arizona SB1070 is NOT the right way to do it.
Many years ago, although I am a US-citizen, and before there was the requirement to carry proof of citizenship when crossing the US/Canada border, I was detained upon trying to return from Canada to the USA.
Why?? Because I look Asian….so I couldn’t “possibly” be a US-citizen….and **I** needed PROVE that I was before I would be allowed to re-enter. So…how does one PROVE that he is when he is not required to carry that proof on him?? Fortunately, in my case I am a naturalized citizen so that means I have an extensive file with INS. I was also fortunate to remember certain details regarding my background which the border inspector spent maybe 15mins researching and cross-referencing on his computer and consulting with his backroom supervisor before he finally allowed me to pass.
Honestly……Do you think he would have stopped, questioned, harassed, & detained me if I was blonde-haired & blue-eyed?? Or….if I had been born in the USA then those records may not have been so easily accessed from his gov’t computer and there would have been more follow-up investigating. I would have been SOL sitting in “airport-jail”, still in Canada….until a family-member/friend/lawyer could come to assist me.
You obviously have a different POV on this issue than some of the rest of us. Perhaps you need to be detained and considered a criminal (even though you have done nothing wrong) in order to realize how racist the law is.
YMMV.
Good Luck!! 8-D
@Bond: Sorry, that you had to go through all that extensive search when you came back to the U.S. I went to Canada before I became a naturalized citizen and all I showed to the border patrol was my driver license and green card. I didn’t encounter any search or detention. However, how do you know that blond hair and blue/green eyes people are not stopped at the border to show proof that they are the citizens of the U.S.? You are making assumptions that they are not asked or searched.
The new federal immigration law which began I believe about 2 years ago requires when you come back the U.S. when travel outside of the country if you’re a citizen that you need to show your passport.
I’ve met and heard from of my Caucasian and Asian acquaintances that they have to show their passports when they come back to the AZ from Mexico.
I support this law because I ‘m tired of the illegal immigrants taking advantage of our social services where they receive a lot of freebies and not paying taxes. They receive free healthcare, housings, stipends for food, childcare, etc. Our state could not afford to support all of these freebies. Besides this, we have illegals killing our police, drunk driving, kidnapping, gangs violence, and on and on. We are ranked #1 in the nation for kidnapping. The kidnapping is due to the coyotes demanding ransoms from the family that they helped crossed the borders. Recently in March, a rancher in Southern AZ was killed with his dog because of an illegal crossing on his land and he was driving toward this person because he thought this person needed help. These ranchers spend millions of dollars cleaning up after the trash and excretions left behind by the illegals aliens crossing on their land. One of the Sheriff was shot by some drug cartel guys crossing the border heading to Phoenix.
What do you suggest we should do? If you have any other good ideas or suggestions please submit them to the AZ state legislatures. It’s unfortunate that most of the illegals are from Mexico. But you have consider that the terrorists also could cross the border from Mexico and do harm to the people of our country if our border is not secured.
This law is not that different than the federal and California immigration law enforcement. Unfortunately, the federal government is not doing enough that Arizona has to pass this law in order to control the illegal immigrations.
heated debate.
i likeyyyy…
man, if you’re willing risk you life to come this country to make a living, you deserve to stay here.
most gang members aren’t illegals. think about it. if you’re an illegal immigrant would you want the attention of the police by committing crime? that’s crazy. btw anyone can get a drivers license. legals and illegals. this whole situation in Arizona is so surreal. it’s like living in eastern block communist country or something. these people and miserable life because of economy and they have to pour some hate on someone and guess who they chose, the immigrants and masking it by saying it’s for our safety.
