I’m a big geek of all things that are geek worthy out on this planet… but I’m especially a comic book geek. In the past two years I’ve been following my new addiction of Adrian Tomine’s illustrated stories (no mutants or mad scientist here) and if anyone has seen his artwork, it’s worthy of a gold frame. So, to my surprise while skimming through his recent sketchbook I find this one piece…

It was a cool looking asian guy holding money in a school setting. Almost instantly I knew that this was from “Better Luck Tomorrow” and used in the New Yorker magazine. I’m sure if we played pictionary and I drew the 3 descriptions I mentioned… you’d be guessing “Long Duk Dong” from “Sixteen Candles”. That’s why Adrian’s drawings are so distinct and that you can’t help but find familiarity and connection to his works. He has done many one piece movie illustrations, but if you had watched BLT you will know that this simple looking art work is not that simple to create such a significant snapshot summary of the movie.
If you want to read something true, honest and sincere, then look for Adrian’s fine works like “Summer Blonde” and “Sleepwalk”… oh so good.

they should title this awesome drawing – “Jaundice Han”

I liked Shortcomings as well.
This shot in BLT made me hot for Han. Did Han even talk in the entire movie? I think he may have said one intro line and that was it. The Harrison Ford of Asia-America was born. Meow.
i don’t know Adrian, but we were both berkeley english majors at the same time. having published Optic Nerve as a student, he was already a minor celebrity on campus… so i’ve been a fan since ’92 and own all his graphic novels… he practically invented emo along with David Clowes.
Aw yeah! More comic book love!
Sweet Han art!
Adrian Tomine’s fresh to death. I can’t recommend SHORTCOMINGS enough. Do yourself a favor, Asian America, and cop it.
Peace.
