When fellow Offender, Alfredo, wrote about Tina Fey in his post about loving women who are hot messes, it provided me with the opportunity to announce that I may have a problem. A fetish, if you will. I love women with glasses! There, I said it. Big weight off my shoulders. In Japan, there’s a term for this sickness: MEGANEKKO or “glasses-wearing girl.” It’s huge in anime and manga. If you did a google search, your mind will be blown away at the amount of sites out there devoted to this “attractive trait.” Mainly, it deals with anime, like here and here (NSFW).

So yes, I’ve always loved girls, err, women who wear spectacles. They’re something about how they frame a face. It’s also a character quirk, because most likely, women who wear glasses tend to be intelligent, or read a lot; they don’t wear contacts, therefore are not too vain. Well, that’s what I think. It’s a signature trademark that I just immediately notice. In fact, celebs that I have crushes on, tend to be women who wear frames.  Charlyne Yi from PAPER HEART is too darn hipster cute, for example. But here are my personal bespectacled faves. Hey lady, need me to massage your nose pad marks? Ooh, that was creepy…. Anyway, like I said before, my faves:

LISA LOEB: Big fan! When this bespectacled singer-songwriter and Brown graduate appeared on the  Reality Bites soundtrack with her most famous tune, “Stay”, I was smitten. Game Over for me. She was the perfect concoction of cute and smart, artsy and self deprecating that I looked for in potential girlfriends.

And although her career never really caught fire after her eponymous debut, I stayed a loyal fan and bought every album she put out and enjoyed them immensely. In fact, in 2003, my friend was attending a music festival, where Loeb was one of the headliners. He came up to her and blabbed that I was her biggest fan and then made her call me on my cell phone. When I got that call, it was so surreal. I was having lunch with my friend and he just saw me, speechless and stuttering. When I got off the phone, the conversation was even more absurd:

Friend: “Who was that?”

Me: “It was Lisa Loeb.”

Friend: (Perplexed with a mouthful of Panda Express) “Why would Lisa Loeb call you?”

Uh…. exactly. One of my favorite Loeb tunes is “Do You Sleep?”. Ahhh, the ’90s.

ANGELA AKI: She’s not really known in the USA, but she’s an Asian-American singer-songwriter (see a pattern?), who is very big in Japan. Her music is kind of like Tori Amos-lite, with a tinge of Sarah McLachlan, who actually inspired her to become a singer, when she attended her concert in 1997.It’s also cool that she lived in Hawaii during her high school years. She had some big hits in Japan and some crossover success, when she wrote and performed the theme song for the Final Fantasy XII videogame. You can check out her song, “Kiss Me Goodbye” here.

ASHLEY BANFIELD: I used to watch her all the time on MSNBC. She now hosts some crime shows on TRU TV (formerly Court TV), which I don’t get anymore. But Banfield, when she was on MSNBC, reported on financial news daily. And those glasses!

LANE KIM: I loved GILMORE GIRLS. Well, the first few seasons anyway. The neurotic, rock band dreaming, trying to break out of her repressed Korean household character of Lane Kim, played perfectly by Hawaii born Keiko Agena, was one of the best characters on the show. Ah the witty banter from those wacky citizens of Stars Hallow! There have been a ton of Lane Kims in my life… You know, nearsighted Asian girls.

I would even go far and say that Sarah Palin is milfy. I’m repulsed with everything she stands for, but hey, it’s kind of like Offender Phil’s sordid desire to bang Michelle Malkin. Even I can’t figure that out. Which makes me kind of happy, because I’ve been kind of embarrassed about this. Hey, I went to Catholic School all my life, so the whole repressed shit gets to me. Wait-a-sec, as a Catholic reared child, shouldn’t that make me more sicko? Whatever the case, I am a proud advocate of the meganekko.

I leave you with another meganekko from Japan, Tommy February6, a persona created by J-pop singer Tomoko Kawase of the band The Brilliant Green.  Inspired by American and British 80s synth pop, Tommy February6 is Pikachu meets Sweet Valley High incarnate. Check out her debut music video (from 2001), which I absolutely think is amazing. Why? The glasses, of course! YouTube Preview Image What other bespectacled fine females do you fancy?
