Um, yeah. Zany as Japanese ads are, I’m going to put my impeccable judgement on the line and call this out as a fake.
I’ve spent some time in Japan, and while that doesn’t give me much cred, there is something about this commercial that screams Uncanny Valley. It looks like a western parody of a parody of a Japanese spot. It’s a bit too Mr. Sparkle. As hard as it is for gaijin to believe, Japanese ads actually do make sense in cultural context. This doesn’t.
Someone prove me wrong. Go ahead, make my day.
Further evidence. These girls don’t really look all that Japanese. I’m not one of those people that claims he can tell the different Asian ethnicities apart, but something about their mannerisms, makeup and clothes doesn’t seem right.
Also, the translations are a bit too perfectly Engrishy. Come on, there are enough Japanese-English speakers out there so we don’t get old Hong Kong chop-socky subtitles anymore.
