Revisiting Justin’s entry on the illogical ROCKY III training montage, I felt compelled to defend the inevitable Cold War allegorical, cheesier ROCKY IV which in my opinion, is the best Rocky film ever! Although I concur that Part III had a great cheesy training montage that wiped away the viewer’s suspicions that our hero was taking some HGH on the side to beat Clubber Lang, but part IV… Two thirds of Part IV is all montages! And with cheesy, obscure 80s rock singers!
Here’s exhibit A, as Rocky takes a night time drive after the death of Apollo Creed. The life-ending fight between Creed and our Soviet villain Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren, who earned an MA in chemical engineering and was also a Fulbright Scholar) is replayed in Rocky’s head, as well as scenes from Parts I – IV! The song is NO EASY WAY OUT by Robert Tepper:
But, back to the ultimate training montage, I throw my hat at ROCKY IV again. The whole West vs. East / Analog vs. Digital / Training in a rustic barn vs. Darth Vader’s gym, accompanied by the awesome HEARTS ON FIRE by Vince DiCola, makes me want to wave an American flag while I drink my Pepsi Free. Check out the evidence below. And oh, by the way, for shits and giggles, this clip is in French. Even the grunts and groans of Drago over-exerting himself while training are dubbed:
I love montages, especially when it comes to the ROCKY kind. Now, we’re all media savvy consumers of pop culture, and you’ve seen one montage, you’ve seen them all. The geek sitcom THE BIG BANG THEORY did a clever twist on EYE OF THE TIGER though:

Do they really think that leaving in the original huffs and grunts will disturb my suspension of disbelief?
On a side note, in the Spanish version of Terminator 2, “Hasta la vista, baby” is dubbed and just as awesome as the original.
that made me nostalgic.
i’m going to go jump into my lamborghini right now, peel out from my mansion and drive aimlessly through the night thinking about the joys of having 1% body fat and a 10 pack.
btw…that montage was impressive. especially since it was cut during the pre-nonlinear editing systems. some person had to do those quick MTV music video cuts by hand.
dolph lundgren is a freak of nature. mind of einstein. body of zeus. sultry looks of Sung Kang. it is a trifecta of superlative perfection that cannot exist in the same time continuum of reality.
the dude’s sperm should be priceless
