[...] Better Luck Tomorrow (2002), a film about disillusioned Asian-American youths was electrifying to see on the film festival circuit because it was a breakout, mainstream film that put Asian faces on the big screen, but wasn’t about being all noble. On contrary, it was pretty inflammatory and anti-role model, with suburban ennui gone wrong. But, it was made by Asian-Americans on its own terms and that’s all that matters. In the end, BLT is a benchmark, an extension to the Class of ‘97. [...]

Wow, this was a great history lesson in Asian-American cinema. I remember Better Luck Tomorrow coming out when I was in high school in orange county and it was really unprecedented. Glad to know that the movement goes even further back.

Anyone know where I can get a copy of Sunsets and Strawberry Fields? Netflix doesn't seem to have either at the moment.

I had sent in captions with the photos in case they'd be needed. "This was the first day of shooting in July 2006..." and "Here's so-and-so at the premiere on March 2007..." Oops, 1996. Oops, 1997...

I remember watching these films! (I was only 5 years old at the time too, Roger.) But I remember how awesome it was that these were asian faces who didn't speak with accents or come from some mythical faraway place. It made being asian 'normal'. God, that was a great year.
