Caught these ads over at Gawker for the China Times, a Chinese restaurant in Dubai:
“Brings out the Chinese in Anyone.” Uh, yeah…
I can imagine how the pitch meeting to come up with this ad campaign went down:
“You know what’d be a real cool way to market this Chinese restaurant? Chink eyes, it’s all the rage. Remember these…”
“Yeah, yeah, that’s awesome, let’s do it!”
“Cool, well, if we’re done for the day, I’m going to put on a white robe now and go burn some lawn crosses.”
“That sounds like a great idea. Can I join you?”
“Of course, the more the merrier.”
As for me, I prefer the home-grown and bluntly honest marketing campaigns for the Chinese “mom-and-pop shop” restaurants right here in the good ole U.S. of A:
Of course, we may have the opposite problem in America where our advertisers can be a little bit too sensitive. Why else would Lowe’s, for example, pull this heart-warming commercial featuring our good friend Parvesh Cheena enjoying the Lowe’s holiday shopping experience:
Ah, nothing goes together like the holidays and racism. Merry KKKristmas, everyone!

in this context “chinky” made sense. let’s keep our Asian racial epithets correct, after all not all Asians are the same right?
None of those pictures look really out of place to me I didn’t really get it at first but now that I see it it’s pretty ridiculous. The first guy looks normal just smily (“middle eastern” people are technically asian too – West Asian in my mind maybe that’s why I didn’t get it) and the last one is def. offensive buuut I have to say the ‘black’ guy is kind of hot and looks like a few black guys I’ve seen maybe there actually is some Chinese in a lot of people since the eyes fit his face so well
