Happy Blade Runner Birthday, Pt. 2. Happy Birthday, David Bowie.
Last week I posted about January 8th being the birthday of Roy Batty from BLADE RUNNER. Roy’s a fictional character, of course, never mind being a Replicant. I neglected to mention that January 8th is also the birthday of David Bowie. It didn’t seem as big a deal at the time because at the time, to our knowledge, he was alive. And then David Bowie passed away yesterday, shortly after reaching his 69th birthday and releasing his 25th album.
Happy Birthday, Roy Batty From BLADE RUNNER!
TODAY, January 8, 2016, is the incept date (a.k.a. the birthday) of Roy Batty, the Replicant played by Rutger Hauer in Ridley Scott’s magnificently important 1982 film BLADE RUNNER. For those of you who haven’t seen it, the Replicants are artificial humans who are stronger and svelter than real people, but unable to grasp emotions due to their short three-year lifespan. Roy leads a rogue group of Replicants in a quest for longer life (and feels), and Harrison Ford gets the dirty job of killing them.
Roy was brutal, sensual, and had artificial eyes made by James Hong. He is best-remembered for his last words spoken to Deckard/Harrison Ford in one of the most beautiful scenes in all of science fiction.
7 Mind-Controlling Marvel Villains Who Can Creep On JESSICA JONES In Season 2, Whenever That Happens
Happy New Year! Here’s hoping 2016 brings health, warmth, progress, and a new psychotic mind-controlling villain from Marvel’s archives to battle Jessica Jones, because that was the best superhero thing that happened last year.
1. Mesmero – Probably too similar to Kilgrave, in that they both wear purple, but Mesmero is Marvel’s other most notorious mind-controller, who, among other things, once persuaded all of the X-Men to join the circus.
Dominic’s Top 10 Geek Events of 2015!
2015 was one of the nerdier years in the history of years. Counting down to number 1, in increasing order of important geekery:
SDCC was so huge this year, it didn’t even have an official Marvel Cinematic Universe panel, and it was STILL huge. There was a lot of cosplay and even more texting. The Nerd Prom remains a gathering unlike any other, uniquely welcoming to the cool and un-cool alike. Wonder-Con, SDCC’s less-mobbed-yet-soulful cousin, is gonna move to downtown Los Angeles next year, so watch the eff out.
The New York Times Has Nothing Better To Do Than Hate Asian Superheroes?
Sunfire is an Asian superhero. Technically not Asian-American. but definitely created by American guys.
I don’t want to contribute to trafficking this nonsense, but America’s most important newspaper published an op-ed titled “That Oxymoron, the Asian Comic Superhero.” The basic idea is that there’s no reason for comic characters to be Asians, because Captain America and Batman are just fine how they are, and the recent wave of Asian superheroes is somehow weird.
The headline of the piece is only moronic. It’s clickbait that frames a discussion in a way that only serves closed-mindedness, e.g. “Things Women Should Never Do In Front Of Men,” “Which Country Has The Biggest Penises The Answer Might Surprise You,” “Why I Will Never Date An Asian-American Man.” (I don’t think I made any of those up.)
Merry Xmas! THE FORCE AWAKENS Is So Much Better On Second Viewing! (SPOILERS & REDACTION)
Okay, it’s been a week, so we really shouldn’t have to live in fear of STAR WARS spoilers at this point, but anyways, SPOILERS AFTER THE JUMP TO HYPERSPACE:
INTO THE BADLANDS Season 1 Finale And How It Affects My Love Life
So INTO THE BADLANDS, for now, ends here. A Season 2 is assumed, but not yet confirmed. Essentially what happens is:
Sunny’s still trying to leave the Badlands. There’s a planned coup involving Quinn, Ryder, the Widow, and lots of double-crossing. Quinn throws Sunny in chains. Waldo (the ex-Clipper in the wheelchair) breaks Sunny out. Meanwhile, Veil’s abducted by Butterflies so she can treat the Widow, whom Sunny wounded in the previous episode. Veil uses her knowledge of poisons and tinctures to escape the untenable situation. Then there’s a big fight at the Dollhouse in which:
– M.K. unleashes his power and demolishes Baron Jacobee’s ambush force.
– Sunny kills Baron Quinn.
– Some warrior monks show up to take M.K. Sunny goes Darth Maul on them with the double-bladed sword attack. The monks all seem to be Dark Ones like M.K., and they knock out Sunny using a super-powerful wirework-Voltron-cheerleader formation.

OK, FINAL WARNING! SPOILERS AFTER THE JUMP:
Star Wars Brunch 2015: The Frittata Awakens
My sister Kiri and I collaborate to throw pop-culture themed cocktail parties. She makes the cuisine and I design the drink menu. This past Sunday we hosted a Star Wars-themed champagne brunch in honor of Episode VII’s release.
It’s difficult to sum our feelings about THE FORCE AWAKENS, in this final week of not knowing what it is. It’s the only STAR WARS film that we have not seen a thousand times. It could, upon coming into existence, fill us with that slightly nauseated feeling that our childhoods were based on a lie (as THE PHANTOM MENACE did) or it could give us, literally, new hope (as A NEW HOPE did).
INTO THE BADLANDS Episode 5: “Snake Creeps Down”
After last week’s somewhat underwhelming episode, this week’s INTO THE BADLANDS ups the dramatic conflicts. ITB, IMO, is at its best when it’s mashing up the martial-arts fantasy with allegorical references to America’s dark history of slave plantations. When Quinn orders one of his thralls to be moved “closer to the house” or when the cogs make use of a tunnel system below the Fort that evokes the Underground Railroad — we feel that this futuristic show has a social conscience, and strives to be about something truly ambitious, and dangerous.
“Why Don’t You Smile More?” Dom & Vic’s Spoiler-Filled Review Of JESSICA JONES Season 1 Finale
It’s more of a live-blog than a review, actually. Vic & I watch the finale of JESSICA JONES Season 1, Episode 13: “Smile”:
Victoria: HAVE YOU ALREADY BEGUN?
Dominic: You said now, I’m doing now.
V: If you learn any lesson from this show, it should be that communication is important or everyone dies. Okay, starting now.
D: BTW this is the episode where someone smiles, according to the title. OH HEI ROSARIO DAWSON FROM DAREDEVIL.
INTO THE BADLANDS Episode 4: “Two Tigers Subdue Dragons”
Sunny somewhat answers the question that was infuriating me last week, that is, Why doesn’t he just kill that awful Baron? According to Sunny, Quinn’s death would “bring the other barons right to our door,” and, as evidenced by this episode, it seems that ALL the barons are pretty much bloodthirsty mofos, so I guess it’s a lesser-of-seven-evils situation.
Similarly, Veil is still in the unconscionable position of having to medically treat Quinn, the man who killed her adoptive parents. She insinuates that the Baron’s tumor is irreparable, and that the most she can do is euthanize him with a poison.
I got to tell you, I’m in favor of that. Quinn is a scumbag.
