Several years ago, I showed up in my roommate’s doorway to see what he was up to. I was probably brushing my teeth, since this is when I usually show up in people’s doorways to see what they’re up to.
I found Bryan sitting on his drum throne, paging through a book of photographs: Midsummer Snowballs, by Andy Goldsworthy.
In the summer heat of 2000, Goldsworthy placed 13 gigantic snowballs (weighing 1 ton each) around London’s financial district. Each snowball contained different things – feathers, barbed wire, stones, wool, seeds – that Londoners discovered as the snow melted over the next 6 days.
Goldsworthy assembled the snowballs during two of Scotland’s snowy winters, and placed them into cold storage. I would have liked to be one of the dudes working the cold storage place and thinking quizzical thoughts about the crazy guy rolling in giant snowballs.
Here are a few more photos of work by Goldsworthy.

There was a documentary about Goldsworthy called Rivers and Tides. I didn’t know about the snowballs but the leaves and stone egg are definitely him.
RIVERS AND TIDES is amazing. One of the best docs on contemporary art. Also, the last photo looks like the vessel that Jor-El (Marlon Brando) put the young Kal-El in before Krypton exploded in SUPERMAN THE MOVIE.
Wow. I really appreciated that. I know very little about the art world, and that picture of the leaves made me so happy to know someone goes out there and makes ‘gifts’ for people to see. Snowballs! With secrets inside! What a wonderful concept… hopefully brings out the inner kid out of the daily cynic…

How could i write about him in an assiment as his artwork is Amazing
Hi Kaya,
Good question. I always do my research the ghetto way: sitting on my butt in front of a computer while I’m eating potato chips. As MacLu said, there’s a documentary about him called Rivers and Tides that you should check out. He’s a very popular artist, so you should have no problem finding info about him. If you’re in LA, the LAPL has plenty of his work you can check out. Good luck!
