Dear fellow Asian Americans:
So many of the folks who happen to inhabit my social media feeds are fellow Asian Americans and this past week, I’ve noticed you’ve been busy sharing two news items involving our community/racism/Hollywood.
The first is a piece that ran on Jezebel entitled “Why Aren’t Asian Actors Getting Leading Roles in Hollywood” (click here to read in full) and the other are the stories about the racist tweets that have been flying around in the wake of the new film Olympus Has Fallen which once again features North Koreans as the baddies.
And all I have to say is—this has to stop! Now! Why you gotta be kissing the white man’s ass when it comes to anti-Asian racism? Let me explain:
Let’s start with the Jezebel article. On its surface, there’s nothing wrong with the piece—in fact, it argues for more Asian leading roles in Hollywood (technically, it should be Asian American but will forgive the writer for that) and even calls out my fellow Offender Sung Kang as a “truly talented Asian” guy “with matinee idol good lucks. That’s an argument I’m sure most readers of this blog can get behind.
But the article really doesn’t offer any new insights—it’s all shit we already know. Hell, Asian Americans have been discussing and writing about this topic for decades now so it should be business as usual. But when Asian Americans write on this topic, it barely causes a ripple with our peeps, yet when a white site like Jezebel (yes, I know they’re technically not “white,” but come on…) tackles this subject and in a very broad/general way I might add, we fall all over ourselves to facebook and tweet that shit out and talk about the issue as if we were given something so educationally mind-blowing that we can’t help but share it? That shit may be “deep” to white readers, but we can do better than stooping down to kiss white ass for something that doesn’t even deserve it.
As for the Olympus Has Fallen racist tweets—are tweets like this:
really that surprising?
Haven’t we seen this sort of thing over and over again (see here and here for past examples)? I’m not saying this shit isn’t fucked-up ‘cause it’s majorly fucked-up but what I don’t get are my fellow Asian Americans who are sharing these stories with the “I can’t believe this sort of thing still exists” reaction. Really? In-bred hicks spouting racist anti-Asian vitriol after seeing a film with North Korean baddies—that’s hard to believe? At this point, I’m more surprised that we’re surprised and that we’re giving these racist fucks an additional 15 minutes of fame. Fuck that! Let’s move on. Nothing to see here. We got more important places to be and better things to do.
