Song 31: “A Million Miles Away,” The Plimsouls.
I was dj-ing at the Ruby Room when a girl approached the booth. “Do you have ‘A Million Miles Away?’ by the Plimsouls?” “I’m not sure,” I answered. “Lemme check.”
As I was flipping through my records, she said, “My uncle’s the bassist.” “Are you serious?” I asked. She nodded. Shit. I don’t regularly bring the record with me: it’s a fairly obscure one-hit wonder; no one ever requests it; I just bring it if I happen to be in the mood to play it that night. “Hang on,” I told the girl, “don’t go anywhere.”
I frantically went through all my records, and, a moment later, stood up triumphantly, the disc in hand. “Ohmigod,” was all she said. “It’s on next,” I told her. She tried to give me a two dollar tip, but I declined (twenty bucks and I might have wavered).
The song was featured in this 80′s classic (just look at the left side of the poster – it’s a Who’s Who of 80′s one hit wonder bands):
