Song 27: “Cheek To Cheek,” Fred Astaire.
The Stones vs. The Beatles. Chocolate vs. vanilla. Fred Astaire vs. Gene Kelly. Kelly was a gymnast, Astaire was an artist. Watch from about the 2:00 mark on. Even in this relatively understated dance number, Astaire glides breathtakingly across the floor, defying gravity, his every movement gracious. You felt Gene Kelly’s weight. Astaire became ethereal. The year was 1935, the film “Top Hat.” In the midst of the Great Depression, I could easily imagine wanting to disappear into a luxe world of art deco sets, feather dresses, and dreamy dancing.
