The YOMYOMF Network: And So It Begins…

  • February 27, 2012 12:18 am

If you were checking out our twitter, facebook or tumblr this weekend, you know that it’s official…we shot the very first project for our upcoming YOMYOMF Network on YouTube. Yup, the show is entitled Acting For Action and it stars our own Sung Kang a.k.a. Han from Tokyo Drift.

Girlfriends: Tony, Clara C & Sung

You may be wondering if the image above or the ones you’re about to see below are giving away too much information. If so, you obviously don’t know us that well because what you’re going to see when the show premieres in April is going to be much more worse disturbing outrageous. Believe me—much more.

Acting for Action stars the Sung you’ve all come to love from the Car Talk Discussion series (see here and here if you have not experienced its magic). This time, Sung is on hand to teach young actors the techniques that they will need to successful act in Hollywood action movies just as he did as Han in Tokyo Drift.

YOMYOMF Site Maintenance Tonight (2-26)

  • February 26, 2012 10:43 am

Dear readers:

Just a heads up—we’ll be doing some maintenance work on our blog tonight so the site may be temporarily down/unavailable between the hours of 6-11 PM (PST). This is all a part of our continuing effort to make YOMYOMF better and stronger—to turn YOMYOMF into the type of blog that’ll always be there for you no matter the circumstances like even after you’ve broken up with your significant other because you came home early from work one day and walked in on him/her cheating on you with the yogurt guy from the new froyo place down the street which—now that you think about it—explains your significant other’s sudden interest in yogurt products and “live and active cultures” (what does that even mean?!) which obviously was just to ruse to sneak out every day for froyo and…uh, anyway…

Thank you for your patience and we apologize for any inconvenience.

Add Your Own Caption: Hello Gangsta Edition

  • February 24, 2012 7:55 pm

If you’re not already following us on Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr, you’re missing out on a lot of extras you won’t find here on our blog including updates on various Offender-related projects (like the most recent updates about our upcoming YOMYOMF Network on YouTube) and silly, fun things like “Add Your Own Caption.” This is where we post an image we find online or that our readers forward to us and ask you to write an appropriate caption to accompany that image. And we’ll feature some of the captions here.

And the featured caption for this week comes from reader Masa Matsuura (making his second appearance here):

“Say Hello to my little Kitty......."

So check out our Facebook page for future editions of “Add Your Own Caption”, write your own caption and/or “like” the ones you think are worthy and we may share them here.

Would You Like a Bourbon Shake or Hot Brunette with that Double Double?

  • February 24, 2012 4:24 am

Yes, I would – not all counterfeiting ideas are bad – but there’s a little twist here.

Caliburger, the Chinese “In-N-Out” knock off, wasn’t started by the Chinese – its founders are Americans with offices in not-so-exotic Diamond Bar, California (ie, they’re entirely sue-able!).  And how do we know this?  Because 28 year old Jonathan Wong, born and raised in Hercules, California, CaliBurger’s chef de cuisine (no, I’m not making that title up) and director of training and development, is a former manager at an In-N-Out store in Northern California.

Funny how life is filled with odd coincidences.

And the Linsanity Racist Train Continues

  • February 23, 2012 8:50 pm

It’s bad enough that the Asian American Journalists Group came out with a list of “danger zones” when it comes to what is racist and what is not in regards to the phenomenon and man that is Jeremy Lin. It shows that the country is very unfamiliar when it comes to discussing Asian Americans. There’s been a litany of offensive remarks in the media, ranging from tiny dick jibes, unintentional headlines from ESPN, to Lin coming out of a fortune cookie on the Madison Square Garden big screen.

FLOUNDERING FILM FLUNKEE: How I Almost Didn’t Get into Film School.

  • February 23, 2012 11:22 am

This is the story of a boy, a dream, and one great big deus ex machina.

Right after my first viewing of Christopher Nolan’s Memento, I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life. I knew what it was that was going to make me happy. I was twelve, at the tail end of middle school, and the path that lay ahead of me finally had a distinct direction.

Becoming a writer/director was my dream, but my then-reclusive tendencies kept me from practicing my skills as the latter. The former was a lot easier to work on since I spent so much of my time in my room anyway; spending that same amount of time in the same place only while warmed by the sickly glow of my computer didn’t seem to make that much of a difference.

Why Japan is Awesome #881: New App Lets You Control Your Dreams

  • February 22, 2012 10:50 pm

Japanese ad agency Hakuhodo has released a new app that allows you to control what you dream about

Here’s how it works: the app gives you 8 different scenarios you can choose from including a walk in the forest or the beach, becoming rich, flying and even making a love connection with that special guy or gal you have your eye on. After selecting the type of dream you want to experience, just go to sleep while the app runs in the background, and when enough time has passed and you are in REM sleep (and most susceptible to dreaming), the app triggers a soundtrack that will encourage your subconscious mind to dream about what you want to dream about.

The app is free and you can get it here. If any of our Japanese-speaking readers want to give it a try, let us know how well it works.

Chronicling the Genre

  • February 22, 2012 1:48 pm

Or just my random thoughts about the sci-fi and horror movies I’ve watched. After watching Chronicle, it made me think a lot about the genre as Chronicle smartly crosses both sci-fi and horror. It’s a first person documentary-style sci-fi horror film about three teenagers acquiring the unfathomable power of telekinesis after an encounter with something unearthly and alien.

It’s Joe Dante’s Explorers meets Brian De Palma’s The Fury.

Kristi Yamaguchi: Making Asian American Sports History 20 Years Before, Well, You Know Who

  • February 21, 2012 9:55 pm

Twenty years ago today on February 21, 1992, Kristi Yamaguchi became the first Asian American to win an Olympic Gold Medal in the ladies singles category. Her performance brought her worldwide celebrity and an immense sense of pride within the Asian American community. Not unlike another Asian American athlete experiencing his own fair share of worldwide celebrity and Asian American pride at the moment.

But sadly some things haven’t changed much in 20 years. China may represent the growing “yellow peril” these days, but back in 1992, it was Japan in the role of the threatening Asian superpower. And Yamaguchi wasn’t immune from the ensuing racist backlash against Japan.

In the aftermath of her Olympic victory, there was much talk of how her Japanese heritage would prevent her from winning commercial endorsements and if you thought some of the media’s reporting on Jeremy Lin has bordered on racism (“chink in the armor” anyone?), on the heels of her victory, the media criticized Yamaguchi for everything from not being able to speak Japanese to fellow Japanese figure skater Midori Ito (conveniently ignoring that Yamaguchi was an American, born in California) and taking the victory away from a “real” American (that would be fellow skater Tonya Harding).

This Commercial is Bloody Brilliant!

  • February 21, 2012 1:50 pm

This has been making the rounds, thanks in part to Community creator Dan Harmon posting this on Twitter and making it go viral. He apparently walked into the writer’s room as everyone was watching this video online. The commercial was created by Australian comedy duo Henry Inglis & Aaron McCann to advertise the Central Institute of Technology, a real West Australian tech college that runs film courses. These guys have been getting a lot of notice in their native Australia, and McCann’s short film, Perished, will premiere at this year’s SXSW. I love this brand of dark comedy, that only the Aussies can pull off. It’s amazing that the school allowed them to advertise them this way. Makes me want to enroll there!YouTube Preview ImageIt kind of reminds me of another darkly funny director from Australia, Nash Edgerton. His short films Spider and Bear have been around the festival circuit and are yes, bloody brilliant and cruelly funny as hell. Oh, and Nash is the brother of Josh Edgerton of Warrior and the upcoming The Great Gatsby.
